Highlanders have long been among the most feared soldiers in the world and Tim Newark's book admirably tells their stirring tale. Highlander 9 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback
A very good and interesting read which certainly makes one very aware of the all the qualities associated with a highland soldier and the regiments in which they so proudly served. Alas, as a northern Scot (from Sutherland) the book also made me realise just how much our present highland regiments have been decimated or amalgamated into much smaller formations. So sad, but perhaps a refelction of the cut backs being inflicted upon the military as a whole.

A relatively short narrative, the book, in my opinin, is excellent light reading for a rail or air journey

A great read! 22 Oct 2009
By Angus
Format:Hardcover
This is a really good read. What I liked about it was the way Mr Newark tells the history of the Highlanders through the experiences of individual soldiers. Almost every chapter is structured around one main real soldier and we follow his military progress and actions through each chapter. I thought this worked especially well in the Second World War chapters where we follow a Highlander serving in many different combat areas around the world. I loved the story about the Highlander in Aden who was shot in the bottom! Well researched as well, excellent.
