I consider this film a missed opportunity to bring the original concept back on track. The villain of the story line - Mario van Peebles - was to similar to Clancy Brown in voice and mannerisms of the first "Highlander" story that after another scene where he does more gymnastics with his tongue while talking (why do they do that????) that after a while you stopped believing in him in the character. Another incident in the final sword fight where he is cut in half along the waist and the bottom half walked along to join the top half reminds you of the "Tom and Jerry" cartoons, this scene had no place in this movie. It has been often said - with some justification - that Christopher Lambert walks through his movies without putting to much emotion into the roles, this I'm afraid is another one. Having said that the script was so dire that even Lawrence Olivier would be hard pressed to do anything with the story----that more than anything was the main culprit. On the plus side the film is saved by it's "moments" between Christopher Lambert and Deborah Unger while he prepares to meet Mario van Peebles, the Celtic music running through the movie especially "Bonny Portmore" by Loreena McKennitt which was played through a good part of the movie (it even made me buy the CD "The Visit") and the Scottish scenery which made this an okay film rather than a total washout.

Although I still feel that the original Highlander should be considered a stand-alone movie, if you really want more, then Highlander III is worth watching.

Thankfully, this movie ignores the woefully mis-guided Highlander II as though it never existed, and continues 8 years after the events of the original.

While the plot is essentially the same as the original, it does have some highlights, such as revealing more of Connor MacLeod's past after leaving the Scottish highlands and a nice musical score involving celtic themes and the song 'Bonny Portmore' by Loreena McKennitt.

Like the original, the low budget special effects and sometimes poor acting are a downer, but if you can see past that, then it's not all that bad.

Highlander II, too? 27 Dec 2008
By Jenfire
Well the bizareness continues and bizarely enough, I think I preferred Highlander II!! But oddly enough that was just like another Highlander two as it completely ignored all that had happened in number two (rightly enough as it was pretty random) but was just like the "alternative" sequel, pick which one you like best, but they are both CRAZY! Wasn't so keen on this one in general, the premise being that Highlander had made a mistake in the first one, he wasn't actually THE ONLY ONE and is persued by dodgy hulk guy. He also has a son(adopted) and of course the usual lady. Lots of coarse bits in it which were quite unnecessary and of course the usual head chopping. I am in no way defending Highlander II either, but I found the total laughable disbelief of that easier to bear somehow. Happy viewing and do please let us all know what you think!

getting better
Highlander III slots in well with the storyline from the first film. There is the same wooden acting, too, without the saving grace of Sean Connery. Read more
