Book Description

She will never yield—not to the English king, nor to Rory Campbell, the seductive man who saved her but remains her sworn enemy

With her imprisoned mother’s liberty at stake, Jacobite sympathizer Diana Maclean steals into the dungeon of Edinburgh Castle and pulls off an audacious switch. But her bold escapade comes at a price. With her own freedom now hanging in the balance, Diana is unexpectedly rescued by the mysterious Lord Calder. She’s instantly drawn to her kind savior, unaware that he is Rory Campbell, of the Campbell clan—her family’s most treacherous enemy.

The youngest baron of the Scottish Court of Exchequer, Rory manages the Highland estates that were forfeited to the Crown. But the bonny lass he just liberated haunts him. As Scotland prepares for another uprising, their paths cross again. Rory finds himself yearning for Diana, and hoping to protect her family, too. Can they change the course of Scottish history by rising up against a legacy of hate . . . even as they surrender to glorious, liberating love?

    5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely. 11 Dec. 1998
    By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
    Format:Mass Market Paperback
I have nothing to say about historical accuracies, since I am in no position to comment about it, but the book was lovely. In a simple narration, it brings out the story of the young lady in question, bringing traces of humour and irony into the story, such as the daring escapades of switching places with her mother and attempted rescue of her brother. The book was a story, a tale to be told, and not some mushy thing that completely centers around two people and their passion. The passion is there, nicely kept away and blended into the rescue, the characterization is there. Yet it was sensitive, and a gently unfolding tale that leaves much to be remembered. Loved the ending..

5.0 out of 5 stars Love Triumphs Over All! 18 April 2015
By SweetPea - Published on Amazon.com
    Format:Kindle Edition
Amanda Scott gives us a smashing good read in Highland Secrets, book 2 of her Highland Series. Scott is a consummate story teller and doesn't miss a trick in this tale. This book is set after Scotland's uprising against England's defeat of The Bonnie Prince. This is the most difficult time in the history of Scotland for me and I usually avoid books set in this time period because the defeat of the wild, magnificent clan system, and the slaughter and savagery of so many innocents by one another, England's rule and then their subsequent recovery under the foot of the conqueror.
The hero and heroine are from rival clans, with their inbred prejudices against one another, which led to their ultimate downfall to England. They are both vivacious, mature people who have to find a way to work together so that they can quit mourning the old way of life and build a bridge to a better future. Scott paints the era with the brush strokes of hatred, bias, loyalty, betrayal, integrity, redemption, love and hope for a new tomorrow. Her main characters and support people are well-developed from the top to the bottom. They are believable and appropriate and most are likable.
This reader always appreciates Scott's work because she manages to portray a fairly accurate representation of the times, while working in more adverse events and trauma in a love story, than most of us ever suffer in a lifetime. Scott does not fill her books with pages and pages of repetitive sexual fluff, but keeps the story real while allowing the romance to develop. She allows the tale to stand on it's own merits and then seasons it with the romance and steamy stuff. So if the reader is looking for super-hot sexual escapades this book will not satisfy you, but if you want a tale of a nation floundering but struggling to reinvent itself while two people find their way to one another then book does it well.
I will leave the particulars of the story for the readers to discover but will note that this story was told in a steady, thoughtful pace. The editing was well done, and the scenes flowed back and forth without distraction from one another.
I read this book for free under the Kindle Unlimited Program.
Amanda Scott keep cranking them out~

2.0 out of 5 stars Historically interesting, Romantically? Not so hot. 9 April 2000
    By D. Reardon - Published on Amazon.com
    Format:Mass Market Paperback
First of all, I must say that I found the book to be very interesting historically and from almost a mystery viewpoint, intriguing. But I didn't buy the relationship between the hero and heroine. If you're the type that likes sensual love scenes..this is NOT the book for you. They barely go beyond a kiss anywhere in the book. I was disappointed by the lack of "sparks", but the end was gripping and tension filled.
