3.0 out of 5 stars BAWDY 19 Aug 2011

James II is on the throne of England, James Sinclair is fighting for the King but will change sides or religion, without a thought if he thinks it will benefit him. A young lad is captured after a battle by a group of men intending to torture and kill him they have him surrounded, then suddenly they realise the lad is in fact a woman. Jamie to stop the men ravishing her marries her, for to him she looks like a noble lady perhaps with land and gold. Catherine Drummond cannot understand why this Englishman has married her, but before she finds out even his name the camp is attacked, it is her clan so she escapes. Catherine is the daughter of the late laird of the Drummond clan, her cousin is now Laird and plans to marry her off to an Irishman, to be rid of her. So this marriage to the English Solider might yet be useful. What she does not know is Jamie is in pursuit, he wants to return her to England with him to have the marriage annulled. As King James has an heiress he wants Jamie to marry.
This is not a conventional romance, Jamie is a wastrel he drinks, gambles, is in debt, he is a womaniser. In fact if you do not like books where the hero is with women other than the heroine then this book is not for you. Catherine is no weak swooning limp girl, she is strong a warrior, proud of her clan. The characterisation is excellent the detail of the period is well researched. A very well written book. This basically is a 17th century bawdy romance. Unfortunately this is just not for me.

3.0 out of 5 stars Will it never end 17 Aug 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I love historical romances. I get hooked on the stories and can't put them down - usually. Too much historical fact got me bogged down. The actual story, gallant aristocrat saves heroine from a fate worse than death by marrying her. She, naturally, is a Scottish heiress as well as an amazonian warrior. After the hasty wedding and before he can find out who she is, her clan attack and she escapes in the melee and is rescued and taken home. Intrigued he follows her only to be captured and tortured by her relatives. Her clan want her to marry a Scot but when she explains she is already married they decide she must become a widow first. He endures his torture not revealing who he is and she stands by. If she says he's her husband they will simply kill him. Afterwards she helps him escape. Unfortunately the King wants him to marry someone else and when he reveals he is already married he is ostracised from court and to top this a scorned mistress is there to stab him in the back.. several times. So after nearly a year the heroine joins the hero and as she is a Countess he is reintroduced to court. Their hot and cold sort of romance and lots of court politics (politics is boring) and religion (even more boring) detract from the actual story. I tried to skip bits but it didn't do any good. In the end they go off together but it would have been better if they had done that half way through the book.
