More About the Author

Hannah D. Howell is a highly regarded and prolific romance writer. Since Amber Flame, her first historical romance, was released in February 1988, she has published 25 novels and short stories, with more on the way. Her writing has been repeatedly recognized for its excellence and has "made Waldenbooks Romance Bestseller list a time or two" as well as was nominated twice by Romantic Times for Best Medieval Romance (Promised Passion and Elfking's Lady). She has also won Romantic Times' Best British Isles Historical Romance for Beauty and the Beast; and, in 1991-92 she received Romantic Times' Career Achievement Award for Historical Storyteller of the Year.
Hannah was born and raised in Massachusetts (the maternal side of her family has been there since the 1630's). She has been married to her husband Stephen for 28 years, who she met in England while visiting relatives, and decided to import him. They have two sons Samuel, 27, and Keir, 24. She is addicted to crocheting, reads and plays piano, attempts to garden, and collects things like dolls, faerie and cat figurines, and music boxes. She also seems to collect cats, as she now has four of them, Clousseau, Banshee, Spooky, and Oliver Cromwell.

Slow and boring, i only finished it because I cant bear not to finish a book, but it was a painful process. Being a Scot, I found the Scottish dialogue embarrassing.

The story begins with Alana Murray, a 22 year old woman being tossed into an oubliette, as she has been captured by the Gowans, who want to use her for ransom. She finds she is not alone, and shares the oubliette with Gregor MacFingal Cameron, who is in there for the same thing. Neither will tell the Gowans who they are, and so Alana and Gregor find they are spending alot of time with each other. At first, Gregor believes Alana is a child, as she is dressed this way to fool people, but when they find a way to escape together, he soon learns she is a woman. He finds her attractive, but Alana doesn't see why he finds her so, believing her twin sister, Keira, is much prettier. They pair up together, and after Alana tells Gregor she believes her twin is in danger and wants to find her. They begin to fall for each other, but Gregor fails to tell Alana he was on his way home to become betrothed to a wealthy lady called Mavis Kerr, and he already has 2 bastard sons. He has put it to the back of his mind since meeting Alana, but it is only when she is attacked by thieves, he realises he loves her. When they arrive at his home, Gregor is stunned to see Mavis there, and Alana learns of Gregor's lies. Heartbroken, she tries to distance herself from Gregor, but he won't give her up so easily.

I really enjoyed this book, despite the previous reviews thinking otherwise. Only thing I will say is we do not learn of Gregor's bastard children until near the end, which I think could have been mentioned earlier. Also, we know nothing about these children, just that, from Alana's perspective, they are strong and handsome. We do not know their ages, names, or anything of their mothers, nor why they were handed to Gregor.

A love story that is told as flatly as possible. No magic whatsoever. I kept reading to the end in the hopes that something better would eventually come... a disappointment. This is the first book that I've read of this author, I don't think I would be buying anything written by Hannah Howell again.
