"I had a great time at Sharyn McCrumb's inimitable version of the Highland games."
Charlotte MacLeod
In her third outing as amateur sleuth, Elizabeth MacPherson has the chance to revel in the rites of the old country at the annual Glencoe Mountain Games. But the innocent ethnic fair is cursed when the loathed Colin Campbell is found murdered. When a second reveler is found dead, Elizabeth lays to hunt and untangles all....

This was the first of the MacPherson mysteries I had ever read and I was won over immediately by McCrumb's wry sense of humor. The mystery itself is weak and really secondary to what's happening to Elizabeth in this the most intense story of her "Scottish phase". What was so scathingly funny was her American perceptions of all things Scottish. As an American of Scottish descent it was enlightening to me to see how ridiculous we might appear as we lunge headlong into the search for our roots, tartans, etc. McCrumb's true writing talent is most evident in the ballad novels, but don't miss her wicked sense of humor in the MacPherson mysteries. I can't imagine anyone not enjoying them.

This is the 3rd in the series of Elizabeth MacPherson mysteries, and definitely one of the funniest. There is a delightful portrayal of a Scottish festival and the many participants there. We also get a view of this festival through the eyes of real Scot, Cameron Dawson, Elizabeth's new found enamorata.

The story kicks into high gear when the head of Clan Campbell is found dead. It also reaches hilarious heights when Elizabeth's cousin Geoffrey finds himself mixed up in the screwball Scottish Republican Army, and Cameron is mistaken for a British spy.

If you enjoy fast paced and humorous mysteries, pick up a copy of this book. You'll probably want to read the rest of the series once you get started.

I enjoyed this book immensely. It's light, readable, insightful, and very enjoyable. A whodunnit set at a Scots-American "Highland" gathering in the southern USA it pokes fun at the pretensions of the would-be highlanders and their strange notions of Scotland and Scottishness without actually being cruel. Even the heroine and amateur investigator is not immune to these, which helps the plot along while also setting up some humorous culture clashes with a real Scot who has been dragged along for the weekend and is totally bemused by what he sees and hears.
I admit to an extra interest, being like the Scot in the story an Edinburgh man (and therefore by definition not particularly taken with tartan, bagpipes and Bonnie Prince Charlie) while my wife can, like the heroine, claim membership of Clan Chattan. (No doubt this is why a friend recommended it to me.)
My first McCrumb, but definitely not my last.
