I discovered Nightwish 3 or 4 years ago, with the release of their album "Wishmaster". I'd never heard anything like them - the combination of heavy metal riffs, soundtrack-esque keyboards and orchestration, and classical operatic vocals was unique. Even though a number of groups now seem to be working in a similar vein, none come close to Nightwish - every member of the group is an excellent musician, and Tarja's vocals are head and shoulders above those of any other lead singer in this genre.
This album is an excellent introduction to the band - pretty much every one of their best tracks is on it, with the addition of a new version of "Sleeping Sun" and a live cover of Pink Floyd's "High Hopes" (which is a little disappointing, as it doesn't feature Tarja's vocals) to attract the completists. If you're interested in finding out about Nightwish, I'd recommend this compilation over any of the other albums.
My only complaint is the bonus DVD - only three tracks, no surround sound, and very poor picture and sound quality. It looks more like the QuickTime videos that get appended to CD singles than what you expect of a DVD. Save your money and buy the single disc version.

I admire the fact that Nightwish have updated their Best-of catalogue with this latest effort that includes a mix of all their albums from 'Angels Fall First' to 'Once', plus some of the 'Over The Hills And Far Away' EP.
Personally, I dislike the ommission of '10th Man Down' and 'Come Cover Me', which I think is a far better song than 'The Kinslayer', but this is outweighed by the inclusion of classic power metal anthems such as 'Stargazers' and 'Elvenpath'.
It is rather sad that this compilation marks the end of Tarja's time in the band, but it sums up Nightwish very well and is a very conprehensive collection for beginners, with a few gems for avid Nightwish fans.

An excellent album, a shame Tarja's not in the band any more! The songs are all good with a range of heavier tunes (Wish I Had An Angel, Dead To The World & The Kinslayer) and some more mellow (Sleeping Sun is beautiful) plus a few great covers... Aled Jones eat your heart out, Walking In The Air is brilliantly done! Though I'd have to agree with one of the other reviewers here about the shameful admission of 10th Man Down, and The Siren which is another favourite.
Overall a great introduction to the band!

Nightwish, what can we say? They had a very strong team with Tarja's angelic voice and Tuomas's poised percussion fingers. This album has all of the songs I particularly enjoy and henceforth it fulfils the aim/purpose. I would suggest it to anyone wishing to try Nightwish and they will be simply enchanted by this album.

After having really only become a fan of Nightwish with their most recent album release (Imaginaerum), I am now finding that sometimes when you delve into a band's back catalogue, you find songs you'll love even more! Definitely a fan forever now!

If you're just discovering Nightwish then I definately recommend this best of album because it is really the best of Nightwish up until 2005. It's a great start to get into their music as it covers nearly all albums basically. I was suprised to also see that there is a DVD with 3 live songs on filmed in Finland which I wasn't expecting. The film quality is okay, I don't have a problem with it but it's not like that on 'End of An Era' DVD. I bought this as a secret santa gift at work and she really liked it, as she is a fan of Nightwish also.

For anyone that appreciates their metal music to be of melodic quality, then investing your time in listening to Nightwish is truly worth sorting after. And with Highest Hopes: The Best of Nightwish, you certainly get a very good range of their work ranging from 1997-2005. Whilst you do get a bit of musical déjà vu when listening to plenty of these tracks, there is plenty of charm in its metal orchestration that you wouldn't mind too much about some of the novelty wearing out on its more generic offering. And with their takes on a Gary Moore composition, and their excellent take on Walking in the Air, listeners can appreciate beyond the lyrical workings from their regular band members too.
For experienced listeners of other acts that deal with melodic metal, such as Within Temptation, then listening to this greatest hits album from Nightwish will definitely wet their appetite in listening to further material from this celebrated group.

When the CD arrived in the post, I noticed one of the case hinges broke off, still... thank goodness the CD wasn't damaged.
As for the CD itself, it's got some great song in it such as 'Stargazers' and 'Sacrament of wilderness'.
