4.0 out of 5 stars Great CD - shame about the DVD, 5 Oct 2005
By S. P. Long "Simon Long" (Cambridge) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I discovered Nightwish 3 or 4 years ago, with the release of their album "Wishmaster". I'd never heard anything like them - the combination of heavy metal riffs, soundtrack-esque keyboards and orchestration, and classical operatic vocals was unique. Even though a number of groups now seem to be working in a similar vein, none come close to Nightwish - every member of the group is an excellent musician, and Tarja's vocals are head and shoulders above those of any other lead singer in this genre.

This album is an excellent introduction to the band - pretty much every one of their best tracks is on it, with the addition of a new version of "Sleeping Sun" and a live cover of Pink Floyd's "High Hopes" (which is a little disappointing, as it doesn't feature Tarja's vocals) to attract the completists. If you're interested in finding out about Nightwish, I'd recommend this compilation over any of the other albums.

My only complaint is the bonus DVD - only three tracks, no surround sound, and very poor picture and sound quality. It looks more like the QuickTime videos that get appended to CD singles than what you expect of a DVD. Save your money and buy the single disc version.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good effort, some good songs missing though, 3 Jan 2006
I admire the fact that Nightwish have updated their Best-of catalogue with this latest effort that includes a mix of all their albums from 'Angels Fall First' to 'Once', plus some of the 'Over The Hills And Far Away' EP.

Personally, I dislike the ommission of '10th Man Down' and 'Come Cover Me', which I think is a far better song than 'The Kinslayer', but this is outweighed by the inclusion of classic power metal anthems such as 'Stargazers' and 'Elvenpath'.

It is rather sad that this compilation marks the end of Tarja's time in the band, but it sums up Nightwish very well and is a very conprehensive collection for beginners, with a few gems for avid Nightwish fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great showcase of Tarja-era talent, 1 Mar 2006
An excellent album, a shame Tarja's not in the band any more! The songs are all good with a range of heavier tunes (Wish I Had An Angel, Dead To The World & The Kinslayer) and some more mellow (Sleeping Sun is beautiful) plus a few great covers... Aled Jones eat your heart out, Walking In The Air is brilliantly done! Though I'd have to agree with one of the other reviewers here about the shameful admission of 10th Man Down, and The Siren which is another favourite.
Overall a great introduction to the band!

2.0 out of 5 stars Uneasy mix of opera and metal
Nightwish have, on the surface, a lot going for them: stunning and powerful metal chords and an opera singer with a rich and commanding voice, surely a winning combination... Read more

I was tempted to give Nightwish a try having seen the video for Nemo on the music channels. Now this is a truly excellent song and sounds even better on the CD. Read more
