Book Description

In today’s schools and colleges, many people are involved in giving higher-education advice to students – not just designated HE advisers. Sixth-form and college management staff, tutors, careers teachers, careers advisers and personal advisers – all of these regularly give one-to-one guidance. And they face a tough job not only sorting through an abundance of information, but also finding the most effective ways to guide students through their university and career choices. This unique handbook aims to fill a void in an area where little training is available, where there are no agreed national standards, and where those giving advice have themselves few people to turn to for advice! The book concentrates particularly on the best ways to provide one-to-one guidance, suggesting practical strategies that will be useful both to those with little or no guidance training, as well as to trained advisers who need further information and ideas. Subsequent chapters provide general information on the decision-making and application process. There is also detailed reference material on specific university subjects. The book promotes a practical approach throughout. Advisers should be able to dip into it – even in the middle of an interview with a student – or they can use the information to prepare handouts and presentations. Although the book is based on the English experience, the general principles conveyed will be of use wherever you are.
