Product Description

Synopsis

Sarah Chauncey Woolsey (1835-1905) was an American children's author who wrote under the pen name Susan Coolidge. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio and spent much of her childhood in New Haven Connecticut. She worked as a nurse during the American Civil War (1861-1865), after which she started to write. Woolsey never married, and resided at her family home in Newport, R.I., until her death. She is best known for her classic children's novel What Katy Did (1872). The fictional Carr family was modelled after the author's own, with Katy Carr inspired by Susan (Sarah) herself, and the brothers and sisters modelled on Coolidge's Woolsey siblings. Two sequels follow Katy as she grows up: What Katy Did at School (1873) and What Katy Did Next (1886). Two further sequels were also published: Clover (1888) and In the High Valley (1890). Coolidge is also the author of Verses (1880) and Twilight Stories (? ).

4.0 out of 5 stars But what happened next..?!, 18 Oct 2004
By A Customer
"In The High Valley" concludes the series of stories about the Carr family. Disappointingly, the family hardly appear for the first 50 pages as the beginning of the book is set in England. Fortunately, we are soon back with the family, and it seems that a few surprising events have occured since the end of "Clover"!

Although a huge fan of the series, I can see why this book and "Clover" were out of print for so long. They don't really deal with the adventures of Katy (who is now married and a mother), so wouldn't fit neatly into the "What Katy Did" mould. But like "Little Women", which has continually remained in print along with its sequels, the Katy books are as much about an entire family as one person.

Many loose ends are tied up by the end of the book, but I will always wonder "what happened next?"! However, I think this is a fitting end to the adventures of the Carr family and would heartily recommend it.

3.0 out of 5 stars High Jinks story, but low satisfaction of printing, 4 May 2009
By L. Newman (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
It is nice to finally be able to complete the What Katy Did series of books, but the format and printing of this book was appalling. If there was a proof reader then they should be fired immediately for not only were there several simple spelling mistakes but the paragraphing was quite simply bizarre and somewhat distracting. If all copies of this book are as strange as my copy then I would advise other readers to try to find a different version if possible.
