Edit: I have uploaded an in-depth, 7 minute video review of the new Paperwhite. As so much of what I show in that video is common to to the new Paperwhite and the Voyage, you may well find it helpful watching the video. The video covers, in this order:

- The frontlight, and dimming/increasing its strength.

- How to toggle between displaying the location, page number, time left in chapter and time left in the book.

- Comparison between the old screen resolution (212ppi) & the new one (300ppi). The latter is identical to the Voyage's screen.

- Speed of page turning using the touchscreen.

- Using the `Vocabulary Builder'.

- Highlighting text - how to do it & the speed of it.

- Annotating text - how to do it & the speed of it.

- Responsiveness of the touchscreen when typing or turning a page.

- Moving to a different chapter/page.

- How to use the X-Ray feature.

- Searching on the Cloud for a book you have bought, and the speed of downloading it.

- Searching within a book for a word or words (to try to find something that you remember reading).

Great upgrade from a KK and a lovely device in its own right.

I upgraded from the KK to the Voyage with some trepidation, as I had been very pleased with my trusty old KK (until the Wifi stopped working) and was not so sure about the new style of Kindle, however, I need not have worried. I went for the Wifi and 3G version as there is often no (or sporadic) Wifi in the areas that I travel to and also, having to log onto 'commercial' Wifi from a Kindle was always painfully slow.
I have been very happy with the Wifi-3G Voyage - I can download books on the train, which is a nice luxury.
The Voyage is thin and light, its screen is the same size as the older Kindles, however, the surround is very much thinner, making the Voyage a much better fit in my (small) hand. The screen performance is excellent. I have not noticed any of the issues mentioned in other reviews: it is crisp and clean, and of course, extremely readable.
The Voyage has a light sensor, which I worried might be intrusive, however, it is actually very 'friendly. It does not interfere with reading and, quite the contrary, makes for easier viewing in an environment where the light source and strength changes often (eg on the train).
The battery life seems to be in line with my previous Kindle: ie you do get several weeks of reading time and this is one of my favourite features of Kindles as I am not good at remembering to charge my devices.
All of my library was, of course, available to access via my new Kindle, which was already registered to my Amazon account. It's easy to overlook just how convenient this is.
Colleagues at work asked 'what else does it do?' and I had to say it is 'just' for reading, but frankly, that is what I want it for and it's marvellous at what it does.Read more ›

I am a confirmed e-reader, having given up paper books many, many moons ago. I love being able to carry my entire library around with me and I certainly don't miss the smell or feel of paper. My first Kindle was a Kindle Keyboard (3rd generation), bought around about five years ago and I loved it. I moved on to tablet-based e-reading (Kindle for Android) and eventually ditched the KK altogether about a year or two ago. I have become a little dissatisfied with tablet e-reading however; my Galaxy Tab's battery life is OK, I suppose, but any sort of intensive use drains it so that a recharge during the day becomes inconveniently necessary. The Tablet also holds many distractions and my reading rate and volume has dropped off significantly and the difficulty of reading on a tablet in full sunlight is also well documented.

So, I picked my KK up again and instantly fell back in love with the Kindle experience. I did feel the need to upgrade, however, and decided on a whim to treat myself to a new Kindle.

What's inna box?

Not a lot. The rather lush-looking box is no larger than a medium sized paperback book and it contains a Kindle (thank goodness!) and a USB lead. There's no charger - this is sold separately, which may be an irritation to some, but then there can't be many people who don't have small hordes of USB chargers clogging up their bed side table drawers these days. There's a warranty leaflet and an instruction booklet. This latter is fairly large but, on inspection, the instructions are limited to a single full page diagram of the Kindle and a sparse page telling you how to turn it on.
