Triple bill of western movies starring Clint Eastwood. In 'High Plains Drifter' (1973), the unwelcome arrival of a stranger (Eastwood) in the town of Lagos causes resentment and fear among the locals. However, when they come under threat from a band of escaped convicts, it is to the stranger that the townsfolk turn for salvation. He agrees to help, and sets about teaching the populace the arts of self defence. In 'The Beguiled' (1970), during the American Civil War, a wounded Union soldier (Eastwood) is taken in by the all-female staff of a Confederate Louisiana girls' school as their 'prize'. However, the soldier cunningly plays the women off against each other, working on their sexual frustrations and biding his time until he can make an escape. In 'Joe Kidd' (1972), Eastwood plays a drunken tracker coerced by American business tycoon, Frank Harlan (Robert Duvall), to go in search of Mexican agitator, Luis Chama (John Saxon).

The trouble with box sets is that you seldom get the perfect selection, and this one is no exception. Two great westerns in "High Plains Drifter" and "The Beguiled", and one very mediocre offering with "Joe Kidd". Still pretty decent value I would say! I have already reviewed "The Beguiled" and "Joe Kidd" in some detail so I wont go into too much detail. "The Beguiled" is certainly one of Don Siegel's finest films, if not the best. A refreshingly offbeat movie from Siegel that creates a deliciously oppressive atmosphere. Eastwood is the Union soldier rescued by a 12 year old girl from a nearby Louisiana all girl boarding school. Things then go more Edgar Allan Poe than John Ford as the western goes darkly gothic. Starring that terrific actress Geraldine Page and beautifully shot by the talented Bruce Surtees who also did a great job with "High Plains Drifter", I have long been an admirer of this unusual film which I first saw many years ago as part of a film studies course. Well worth adding to your collection.

"Joe Kidd" is the weakest link in this box set. What a pity "The Outlaw Josey Wales","Pale Rider" or "The Unforgiven", all fine films, could not perhaps have replaced it in this set. Eastwood is the ex bounty hunter hired by wealthy landowner Robert Duvall to hunt down a Mexican revolutionary. After a while he begins to wonder if he is batting for the right side. Directed by John Sturges, written by the talented Elmore Leonard, who did some pretty decent western work, and starring that most gifted of Hollywood actors Robert Duvall, one could reasonably expect good things. Alas this is very average western fare. Aside from a slam bang ending involving a steam train there is little to remember in the film. Sturges was a director in decline.

All brilliant films, especially so, as I am a Clint Eastwood fan and have all,
(I think), 35 of his films
