Product Description

Product Description

A guide to troubleshooting and correcting SQL Server performance problems, this book provides a methodology for use in analyzing any SQL Server database. The most recent advances in SQL Server8i and 9i are covered to make a SQL Server database run as fast as possible. Properly using ratio-based and bottleneck analysis, designing a fast-running database from the ground up, and establishing methods for making storage and reorganization problems a thing of the past are demonstrated. Also presented are new techniques for monitoring and optimizing memory usage and improved methods for uncovering session-related bottlenecks.

A few too many mistakes for my liking 29 Jan 2007
By M. Anderson - Published on Amazon.com
I'm about 50% of the way through this book. I found the first few sections unnecessary but still interesting reading.

There are many SQL scripts referenced by this book and they are only available online (no printed version or CD). Unfortunately, I've had to edit almost every one before I could use it. The problems are various e.g. (1) SQL Server's conformance to ANSI SQL and the way outer joins are written, to (2) they just plain don't work e.g. a temporary 2-column table is populated with the results of a stored procedure that returns 3 columns. This shows me that nobody has actually run the scripts on SQL Server 2005 and that is worrying. I know that once a book is published there is little that can be done until the next edition but the scripts are available online and can (should!) be updated. I also understand that the book was written using a beta version of SQL Server and so changes are to be expected. Again though, the online scripts should be updated. When I am reading a book that says, "Includes SQL Server 2005" on the front cover, I want to believe that the additional information is well thought out and not just bundled in with other text.

The section on page splits seems like it could be important but it's less than one page long and it doesn't tell you how to interpret your findings.

The jury is still out wrt how useful this book actually is but I should have a better impression once I have gone through all the remaining sections.

No depth 16 Sep 2006

If you're looking for a book about how important good design is (no real suggestions on implementing a good design, just a long talk on how important it is), or a book that covers the basics of performance problem diagnosis, this is the book for you.

If, however, you're actually looking for a book that delivers on what the title of this one promises, keep shopping.

Another solid book from this author 16 Aug 2005
By William Curry - Published on Amazon.com
I've read Schumacher's Oracle book as well as his articles, and now he's taken that same style over to SQL Server. I've only had this book for a short time, but it's already paid for itself (more than once). His writing style is easy to follow and the code snippets are excellent.
