Product Description

Product Description

This is a user-friendly guide to the art and science of management from Andrew S. Grove, the president of America's leading manufacturer of computer chips. Groves recommendations are equally appropriate for sales managers, accountants, consultants, and teachers--anyone whose job entails getting a group of people to produce something of value. Adapting the innovations that have made Intel one of America's most successful corporations, High Output Management teaches you:
what techniques and indicators you can use to make even corporate recruiting as precise and measurable as manufacturing
how to turn your subordinates and coworkers into members of highly productive team
how to motivate that team to attain peak performance every time
Combining conceptual elegance with a practical understanding of the real-life scenarios that managers encounter every day, High Output Management is one of those rare books that have the power to revolutionize the way we work

First Sentence
To understand the principles of production, imagine that you're a waiter, which I was while I went to college, and that your task is to serve a breakfast consisting of a three-minute soft-boiled egg, buttered toast, and coffee. Read the first page

Most CEOs can tell you about their successes. Some can tell you about their failures. Few can tell you what they do and why they do it. Even fewer can tell you the principles behind what works for them in a way you can understand. Almost none can turn this into something you can use. HIGH OUTPUT MANAGEMENT has met this high standard. Our company recently named INTEL as a Prototype Company of the Future for its outstanding management practices and benefits created for society. The seeds that provided those great results have been available since 1983 when this book was first published. This book is a modern business classic, and you should read it to check for whether or not you are using these methods in your business activities. Dr. Grove wrote this book in a simple way, so you will not have to be an engineer or M.B.A. to understand what he is telling you.

Grove describes his management techniques in a controlled, predictable environment. After reading Tim Jackson's book ("Inside Intel"), I saw the other side of the coin (less rational...). Grove is always coerent and clear. This is a must read, specially for middle-managers, but read Jackson's book for the full story...

Great teaching tool 23 Oct 1997
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I came upon this book many years ago while an internal consultant for AT&T Bell Laboratories Technical Education. Since then I have found it to be a valuable tool in teaching the basics of management to students inside and outside of corporate structure. I still use it as a member of the faculty of Bloomfield College's Materials Management Institute.
Grove has managed to capture the essence of what a company is all about by using simple examples. No, this isn't a high concept leading edge management text. However, it does communicate the fundamentals of running a manufacturing company clearly and simply. It provides a foundation on which you can build the knowledge of the leading edge theories.
