'A practical cheerfully written guide, broken up into easily digested segments, with plenty of dos and don'ts.'
-- Western Daily Press

Product Description

When Chelsea Duke took a year out to travel round the world alone, she had no idea what she was letting herself in for. Never having described herself as the outdoorsy type or having stayed in a hostel before, life on the backpacker trail held some rather unpleasant surprises. But by the end of the year she had amassed a range of survival techniques to rival Ray Mears, all of which she is generously passing on here. From beauty treatments to do before you set off and how not to kill yourself in a South American shower, to the indispensable nature of the sparkly flip-flop, High Heels and a Head Torch will tell you everything you need to know to keep yourself looking and feeling glam when your wardrobe fits into a shoe box and those little home comforts are a million miles away. As well as lists of DOs and DON'Ts and tons of useful advice on every aspect of the travel experience, including personal safety, High Heels and a Head Torch is full of hilarious anecdotes and is the ultimate survival tool for any glamorous girl about to set off in search of adventure.

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!! 2 July 2009
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is fantastic! I started reading it the day it arrived and wasn't able to put it down. The thing I liked best about it is that it combines genuinely useful information if you're thinking about heading off into the big wide world and highly entertaining stories and anecdotes which made me laugh out loud. There's a healthy balance of realism in there too which I am sure dispels many travellers' myths going around!. I may be a bit beyond the traditional gap year age, but it made me want to buy a plane ticket and some sparkly flip flops and go!
I would totally recommend this book, indispensable if you're planning a trip and a darn funny read even if you're not!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic eye opener 12 Aug 2009
Brilliant read even if you aren't a traveller. Full of fantastic tips. A real eye opener and gives a fascinating insight to many far flung places. Could not put the book down - makes very compulsive and hilarious reading.

As a previous year-out backpacker myself in my thirties, I was curious to see how much I could identify with in this book. However, I found myself openly chuckling/laughing out loud and nodding my head in absolute agreement for so many of the stories - it almost seemed like Chelsea was even me! I also even learnt a few extra tips myself for future trips. Like Chelsea, I definitely found myself learning things as I went around the world myself and wished "if only I had known that before". This is the book I wish I had read. It is a lighthearted, entertaining and practical read for both the novice backpacker, and also for the "experienced" who have been there/done there and just want to be reminded of the good times!

5.0 out of 5 stars High Heels and a Head Torch, Chelsea Duke 4 Sep 2009
Is full of really useful information and good tips and really funny at the same time! Had me laughing out loud on a train full of people even when I was trying to stiffle it. Even if your not planning on going backpacking just yet, or even at all, makes an entertaining read and the hints and tips work for just holidaying and normal traveling too. 4.0 out of 5 stars A nice start 9 Oct 2011
By Echoes
This book is not essential nor will you learn anything important from it that you could not, with a bit of searching, read on the internet. However, having said that, if you've never been backpacking and are thinking of going it's a lovely inspiring read and more importantly positive. After trawling through websites highlighting the dangers of travel and reading bad reviews of hostels you've considered staying at you can be forgiven for feeling more than a little apprehensive about your travels. This book deals with some of the problems you could encounter in a level headed none panic inducing way.
Yes if you've been travelling or are reading it while backpacking you'll probably find it pointless and obvious. It's really a read for a novice who has dreams of travelling but doesn't really know where to start and has absolutely no idea what to expect. It's by no means a complete guide there's plenty it doesn't cover but there'll be one or two things in it you never thought of.

If I had one criticism it would be the chapter "International Relations". Specifically the sections on "How to talk to Strangers", unless you've never met anyone new before, I'm pretty sure you now how to introduce yourself and make conversation whether you've been backpacking or not. The section on "Dating" was a bit strange too it kind of makes the assumption every backpacker is a bit desperate.

Overall a great read for someone uninitiated to backpacking but pointless for anyone who has travelled before.

4.0 out of 5 stars Vicarious pleasures ! 7 Sep 2009
I heard of this book from a number of friends and ordered myself a copy as it sounded so enticing. Even though I am now in possession of my bus pass, and am therefore unlikely to be setting off round the world - with or without sparkly flipflops - I thoroughly enjoyed it, and it was my Must Read book for several before bed sessions. In spite of the fact that my copy is clearly a demic, as large numbers of pages fell out during the first of these sessions, I wouldn't have dreamed of sending it back and having to wait to continue the saga ! For me, another big "plus" is that it is well-written and crafted by an author who is clearly skilled in her use of words, rather than being in breathless, "Oh my Gaaawwwddd" trendy yoof-speak like the lower end of chick-lit or populist magazine articles. I don't know whether even in my youth (I don't think we had yoof in my day) I could have been as intrepid as Chelsea clearly is, but it did make me wish I had perhaps been a little more adventurous and sigh over missed opportunities. I hope this book will encourage others to travel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading!! 6 Sep 2009
Oh HOW I wish that this book had been available about 5 years ago, when I set off on my 6 month backpacking trip. Instead of ending up posting half the contents of my backpack home over the forthcoming months, I would have known exactly what I was getting myself into, and would have been much better prepared. Reading guide books will only give you about the destination that you are going to. No-one tells you about the practicalities about backpacking and what to expect. And there is so much to know about. How do you survive sleeping in dorms with complete strangers? What essential stuff needs to be in that backpack? This book just does this and GIVES AMAZING TIPS AND ADVICE.

Some very amusing anecdotes as well. I've found myself having to hold back, on my daily commute trying to stifle laughter, as all the memories come flooding back!! Even as a seasoned traveller, there are so many great tips that I've learnt - all to be incorporated in my future trips. Just makes me desperately want to pack my bag and head off again (albeit with the recommended sparkly flip-flops, rather than plain 'thongs').

Well worth a read.
