Book Description

Oct 1988
For Leslie, the cost of living--and loving--is getting higher and higher. She has become involved in a strange erotic triangle with Honor, a romantic young woman, and Bernie, a homosexual street hustler. Both Leslie and Bernie want Honor, but all Honor wants is fun. Here is a powerful novel of three young dreamers cuaght up in a life-style they can neither accept nor change....

"A fiercely brilliant writer."

4.0 out of 5 stars An unexpected treat... 22 Sep 2002
Format:Paperback
Having read a number of other Piercy books, I read this one to indulge my completist tendencies!
The characterisation is vivid; whilst it is a little more dated that "Woman on the Edge" (although written later), The people in the story are all well-drawn, fully realised and three dimensional- and the story goes down unexpected avenues, never losing the ability to surprise.
In essence, this is a story about a short period of transition in the lives of three people; but Piercy's writing style give it such depth you'll be picking the book up at every spare moment to see that happens next!
Recommended, but read "Woman on the Edge" first!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fave novel of the 1970s. 20 April 2013
By M. Emery - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I read this book at the end of the 1980s, and have never forgotten it. The characters are real--unsure of themselves, wanting what they cannot have, financially constrained. The central love triangle is raw and moving, but also wise about life's choices and the pain of refusing to choose. The title sums up the book's themes. The book delivers no easy answers to life's struggles, but few American novels of its time depict life's struggles as well. Piercy's strengths as a novelist are well displayed in this book. Recommended to discriminating readers.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Bunch Of Miserable Hedonists Puzzle Over Their Unhappiness 14 Jun 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
The characters in this novel have all the ecoutrements of interesting personalities--groovy hobbies, varied sexuality, and complicated personal lives. Yet, somehow, they remain flat. Maybe it is Piercy's intention to show how ultimately we are all really alone. These characters don't seem to give a damn about each other which makes their convoluted relations unengaging. If you're looking for a good book by Piercy, I'd recommend _Gone to Soldiers_ instead.
