Book Description

• Proves that the majority of cases of stroke, heart attack, and hypertension can easily be prevented by maintaining the proper ratio of potassium to sodium in the diet.

• Updated with scientific evidence from a recent Finnish study showing a 60 percent decline in deaths attributed to strokes and heart attacks.

• Provides a comprehensive program for balancing body chemistry at the cellular level.

High blood pressure is entirely preventable, without reliance on synthetic drugs. Dr. Moore's approach is simple: by maintaining the proper ratio of potassium to sodium in the diet, blood pressure can be regulated at the cellular level, preventing the development of hypertension and the high incidence of strokes and heart attacks associated with it. Dr. Moore updates this edition with a new preface reporting on the latest scientific research in support of his program. The most striking results come from Finland, where for several decades sodium chloride has been replaced nationwide with a commercial sodium/potassium mixture, resulting in a 60 percent decline nationwide in deaths attributed to strokes and heart attacks. Extrapolated to America, the Finnish statistics would mean 360,000 strokes prevented and 96,000 lives saved every year.

Dr. Moore makes it clear that high blood pressure is only one symptom of an entire systemic imbalance. He outlines a safe, effective program that focuses on nutrition, weight loss, and exercise to bring the entire body chemistry into balance. For those currently taking blood pressure medications, he includes a chapter on working with your physician to ensure that any reduction in hypertension drugs can be effected gradually and safely.

This book is written by a biophysicist and medical doctor and the effect sodium has on cells in the body is described from physical principals that are scientifically proven. This is then augmented with compelling anthropological evidence and case studies. It makes extremely interesting reading and I got through it very quickly.

What you should know:

Lowering salt/sodium intake alone is of no use at all unless you can actually decrease the ratio of sodium to potassium that you eat.

High blood pressure is just one of the more visible symptoms caused by not getting enough potassium compared to sodium. If you eat too much salt then you can still be at high risk of heart disease and stroke even without having high blood pressure.

Blood pressure medicine can lower your blood pressure without significantly lowering your risk of heart disease and stroke (and in some cases increase the rates of mortality).

If you change your diet to get more potassium and less sodium, you can lower your blood pressure but more importantly avoid other problems such as insulin resistance/diabetes etc.

The published recommended daily amounts for salt are much too high and you should aim for much less.

I don't have high blood pressure and I read this book because I have family that do. I have now made changes to my diet and am recommeding the same to other healthy friends. Much better to do it before you have a problem as some of the effects of salt are irreversible if unchecked for too long (like hardening of arteries).

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a life saver ... believe me 8 Jan. 2008
By M. Gul
First of all I would like to thank all those who wrote review earlier on this book on and It gave me motivation to buy and try the ideas in this book. God bless u all and the author ...

I am 31 year old with family strong history of blood pressure and diabetes. My father had a stroke at young age of 47 which he survived but untimately had another after 11 years which he could not survive. I was diaganosed stage 3 hypertension just recently which alarmed me because of my family history. I was asked by GP to modify my life style (quit smoking, eat healthy, exercise etc.). I have been exercising quiet regularly (at least 3 to 4 times a week cardiovascular exercise of moderat intensity - means more than 30 minutes) since years but had hardly any idea what healthy eating means, how much salt intake is recommended etc. My GP was surprised why I am getting such high blood pressure at young age as I am not overweight and exercise quiet regularly. I went through lots of tests which were OK but still my blood pressue was high even after quitting smoking and regular exercise. I was referred to Consultant who finally decided to put me on medication. In the mean while, I got hold of this marvellous book and discussed with my consultant whether it is safe to take high potassium diet (diet with high ratio of K/NA - Potassium / Sodium) as recommended in the book. My consultant was happy for me to take up the advise mentioned in the book. You will be surprised how this book transformed my life in just over a month. I used to have on average 190/115 blood pressure before starting medication and this book advise. Just after two weeks of taking this book advise and medication, my blood pressure was 110/70.

5.0 out of 5 stars TH IS METHOD WORKS 28 Mar. 2005
By A Customer
I managed to reduce my bp from 100 distolic average to around 80 in two weeks, I havn't even finished reading the book yet. If you have high bp, then this a must read book. The method is simple to put into practice and for me it worked. My wife is a nurse, and she can't believe the results. If you do want to give it a try, I suggest that you buy a good bp monitor, the British hypertension Society publishes a list of good models.
My heartfelt thanks to all the people who reviwed this book on amazon UK and the US site, your reviews gave me hope, and Dr. Moore you sorted my problem, thank you!

This book provides a detailed explanation of the causes of high blood pressure/hypertension and how you can reduce it and lessen the risks of heart attack, stroke or diabetes. It explains how simple dietary changes and exercise can lower cholesterol and blood pressure naturally, without the side-effects associated with the drugs normally prescribed for hypertension. The book contains detailed medical/scientific explanations, but much of this can be skipped if required and you can 'cut to the chase' and start cutting out salt and excess fat and increasing your intake of potassium-rich foods.

I would give this book 5 stars but the food-specific tables refer to American foods, but don't let this put you off. An inexpensive blood-pressure monitor (Omron MX2 Basic, available from Amazon, is a good choice) and this book can help see your blood pressure fall to a safe, healthy level and keep it there - providing you follow the instructions!

5.0 out of 5 stars Get off those pills 28 Feb. 2010
In consultation with our GP my wife has now stopped taking high-blood pressure tablets. Not only does she no longer suffer the side effects of these treatments, which ranged from mildly irritating to very unpleasant, she feels a lot better physically and mentally and her blood pressure is back to a normal range. She sleeps well and has more energy. It's difficult to say whether restoring the sodium/calcium balance or the absence of blood pressure tablets is responsible, probably the combined effects, but it doesn't matter because the book has done the job.
The book has also made us think about how easily we turn to Pharmaceutical drugs whenever anything is wrong instead of trying to deal with the underlying causes of our ailments. We've not become anti-medicine overnight but we will consider other options in future. At the same time that we bought this book, we also bought a blood pressure monitor and now check our blood presure at home.
