DVD review 26 Feb 2011

This is an excellent example of live-action manga - an OTT rollercoaster action ride, with plenty of gore and violence. The storyline is pretty good, leaving some interesting questions unanswered and a clear indication that Higanjima 2 is on the cards. The characters are interesting, especially the head vampire and Akira's elder brother. The action scenes are well done, and the special effects excellent, the direction is first-rate and the music well matched to the on-screen action. I really enjoyed it, and found it far superior to the likes of Jonah Hex. The extras mentioned by blu ray reviewers don't seem to be on the dvd, but there are some nice little snippets from the promotional appearances, and a trailer. I thought it was great value entertainment, and interesting. If there is a sequel, I shall certainly go for it, and I may even try out the original manga comics.

Higanjima - Review 11 Jan 2011
Format:DVD
So I've watched my fair share of vampire movies, asian horror flicks, manga and live action manga.
Firstly, my initial thoughts (within the first few minutes) were - this is going to good. And it was an understatement, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie.
The plot was great, reminds me of battle royale, just with vampires. If you let yourself get into the movie, you'll end up seeing the more emotional aspect of this film, which is good.

The only down point, is the CGI is somewhat poor at times, particularly on key scenes (like the gargolye - looks like resident evil 3 sorta).
Still, i'd give the movie 9/10...really worth watching!

The heading on the cover of this blu ray states 'Live action manga' so that is a pretty good clue to what you should expect. Akira is a Japanese high school student who's older brother has been missing for two years after going off for the weekend with his girlfriend. We first see him at school being chased by a gang of teenage thugs who are out to give him a kicking and through the chase scene are cleverly introduced to his group of stereotypical high school friends. He is rescued by a mysterious young woman called Rei who hides him in a sleazy hotel. When he and his friends go looking for her they see her paying off the leader of the thugs then being assaulted by a tall stranger who drags her away. They follow them to a deserted warehouse where they see the stranger drinking the blood of a young woman but they in turn are seen and so begins their first encounter with a vampire who attacks them. Rei saves them then explains that Akira's brother is on an uncharted island that has been taken over by vampires and needs his help. After much soul searching the team accompany Rei to the island where the adventure really begins as they are first betrayed and captured by the vampires only to escape and become fugitives. As you would expect there is much over-acting, shouting and swordplay. The vampires can move about quite happily in daylight and apart from the fangs could be ordinary people. Akira, played by Hideo Ishiguro is not a sympathetic character and could be very irritating at times. Best performance is given by Koji Yamamoto as chief vampire Miyabi who steals every scene he is in. Not really worth having in the film was a big fight between the good guys and a massive CGI monster they called a gargoyle but wasn't. This film is worth having in your collection if you're a fan of manga or vampires but only really merits 7/10. There is a very good 45 minute 'making of' featurette which was fascinating for seeing how humble and dedicated the Japanese cast are. The blu ray print is excellent and the soundtrack noisy. It is presented in widescreen letterbox format with English subtitles over a Japanese dialogue.
