Book Description

30 Mar 2012 Best of
Hieronymus Bosch was painting frightening, yet vaguely likable monsters long before computer games were ever invented, often including a touch of humour. His works are assertive statements about the mental illness that befalls any man who abandons the teachings of Christ. With a life that spanned from 1450 to 1516, Bosch experienced the drama of the highly charged Renaissance and its wars of religion. Medieval tradition and values were crumbling, paving the way to thrust man into a new universe where faith lost some of its power and much of its magic. Bosch set out to warn doubters of the perils awaiting any and all who lost their faith in God. His favourite allegories were heaven, hell, and lust. He believed that everyone had to choose between one of two options: heaven or hell. Bosch brilliantly exploited the symbolism of a wide range of fruits and plants to lend sexual overtones to his themes, which author Virginia Pitts Rembert meticulously deciphers to provide readers with new insight into this fascinating artist and his works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bonkers, but in a good way 14 May 2013
Format:Hardcover
While he may not cater to everyone's tastes, I've always found Bosch's paintings deeply evocative and full of details to revel in (not to mention that they're wonderfully creepy). Whether you're coming at the paintings from the point of view of the salvation vs damnation perspective, or if you just want to see Bosch's unique vision at work, then you won't be disappointed by this book. The paintings are vividly recreated and Virginia Pitts Rembert dissects Bosch's work without ever taking away from the mystique of his paintings.

As an art enthusiast rather than an expert I found it interesting to find a little more about the man behind these disturbed paintings and loved the way the paintings themselves took pride of page. I would consider this book a great introduction to Bosch's work, and the mass of great image reproductions will encourage you to revisit the book time and time again.

A very worthy Bosch book, though some of the photos are a bit small. Well written and worthy of a library of other Bosch books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not for everyone 22 July 2012

Hieronymus Bosch was a very interesting painter. He had many interesting ideas but was not as good at painting as his contemporary's. I became interested in Bosch when reading about Detective Hieronymus "Harry" Bosch in a book by Michael
Connelly in the 1992 novel The Black Echo. My advice - read the detective novels.
