4.0 out of 5 stars Dumb but fun 4 April 2003
Format:DVD
Despite its clumsy title and a ludicrous premise Hider in the House is actually an awful lot of fun. Gary Busey plays a wacko who has just been released from the funny farm some 15 years after he torched his family home and all those inside it. He moves into the loft of a nuclear family headed by (the gorgeous) Mimi Rogers and (the not so gorgeous) Michael McKean and lives as if he is one of them, eventually fixating on removing McKean from the picture so that he can take his place.

Yes, dumb premise and full of holes(like you wouldn't check the attic...wouldn't hear bumping around etc.) but Busey's performance is great and the movie is a lot of fun when you see the lengths he goes to in order to slide into McKean's role. It's the kind of thing you might expect to see lurking around a late night channel someplace but don't let that put you off - so far as this kind of movie goes - it's a good one!

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than expected 4 Jun 2011

This film certainly wasn't ever going to win oscars, but it is fun especially if you're a Busey fan. The story is rather simple, a family moves into a new house unaware that a psychopathic ex mental patient has moved into their attic. He watches and listens secretly and convinces himself that he is a part of the family, until the point where he decides that the husband has to go so he can take his place. You do have to suspend disbelief on occasion and not let it bother you that they can't hear him up there, he obviously doesn't weigh much or snore. Apparently the studio had virtually gone bust so the film never made it to the theatres, which may explain how it's gone unnoticed by most people. Not the best film i've ever seen but it's a classic 80's horror/thriller that i'm not ashamed to admit I enjoyed immensely. Very little in the way of extras, but the transfer is better than I imagined it would be. In the last couple of years I have begun to wonder whether Gary Busey was acting in this or if he was just being himself. Not for everyone, if you enjoy movies like Bad Ronald or the brilliant original Black Christmas you may enjoy this.

5.0 out of 5 stars hidden gem 19 May 2012
By mr x
Format:DVD
this movie was an absolute bargain for the price and i cant beleive i had not even heard of it before i stumbled across it while trawling round looking for somthing i not seen. gary busey is as usual great as the ex mental patient hiding out in the atic of a familys new home where he watches and listens to them fantasising about being part of them but as expected this turns sour as he is dangerous. had a similar problem as the one star reviewer where the dvd not load the menu screen on our bedroom dvd player(which is a toshiba) but would on our other two players. reccomended.

1.0 out of 5 stars Pretty poor 17 Feb 2012
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Received the DVD and tried to play it-I say tried because it would not play beyond the copyright warning notice, so sent it back Amazon and received a new copy by return of post, put it in my player only for exactly the same thing to happen this time asked Amazon for a refund, which they obliged. My question to Amazon is if this is a reoccurring problem why are you still selling the DVD title?

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic DVD. 21 Aug 2011
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I watched this film many years ago on vhs video and enjoyed the thrills of it just as much many years later on dvd. Gary Busey has always been a great film favourite with me as his acting is so gripping he really eases himself into what ever character he plays. I was on the edge of my seat many times and you could feel his sense of adrenalin at fear of being found out.
This is good viewing for a saturday night relaxing on sofa with your feet up and bottle of wine. It shall make you think twice about bumps in the night and who maybe hiding in your attic???
