Amazon.co.uk Review

Dakota Fanning--the elfin star of Uptown Girls, The Cat in the Hat, and Man on Fire--trades in her blond locks for a semi-gothic brunette do in Hide and Seek. Fanning plays Emily, a young girl whose mother commits suicide. To help Emily through the trauma, her father David (Robert DeNiro), a psychologist, takes her to an isolated house in upstate New York. But instead of healing, Emily gets dark circles under her eyes, mutilates her favorite doll, and develops an imaginary friend named Charlie. In no time at all, things get spooky and David suspects this imaginary friend isn't so friendly. Hide and Seek owes a lot to The Shining, but whether the creepiness is borrowed or not, there's a decent dose of it (though the twist at the end is unlikely to surprise many viewers). DeNiro does his job with professional gloss, but Fanning carries the movie; she's got the kind of charisma that goes beyond acting ability--that ineffable glow that makes an audience want to watch her. --Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com

4.0 out of 5 stars I'm never playing Hide and Seek again!, 29 July 2005

After the suicide of his wife Dr David Calloway (Robert DeNiro) moves to a remote part of America in order to help his daughter Emily (Dakota Fanning) recover from the trauma only for her to find an invisible friend called Charlie . . .

Very good! This film had me glued to the screen. With a gradual build up, at times slow, the film becomes darker and scarier until the final twist at the end which was a bit of a let down but still fitted perfectly with the film. Robert DeNiro did a great performance but it was Dakota Fanning who stole the show as the creepy daughter.

I looked at the alternate endings and personally I felt that the third and forth were the only ones worth a look at. The DVD also includes the usual 'Making Of' feauterette (worth a look), commentaries and deleted scenes.

Overall, with a good storyline, great performances, a creepy feel, a bit of suspense, you will never want to play Hide and Seek again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Average film with very good acting., 6 Feb 2006

I think this is a good film.Certainly not as bad as some people make out it is.

The story is good,David (robert di niro) and his daughter Emily (dakota fanning) move to the country after the suicide of her
mother to try and start a new life, but things start going badly when Emily makes friends with an imaginary person called Charlie
and soon things get out of control.

There are a few scares and surprises in the film, but it's the acting from Dakota Fanning and Robert Di Niro that are the
best points about this film and i think people should try it and judge for themselves with this film.

On the region 2 dvd there are some extras including 4 alternative endings, some deleted scenes and a making of feature.

4.0 out of 5 stars Seek this out!, 6 Nov 2005

I didn't know too much about the stoyline for the film before watching, which is probably the best way to enjoy a good thriller. This is definitely one of the best thrillers I have seen for a long while. It is as good as Secret window, What lies beneath, so if you liked those you'll love this.
De Niro plays a father who looks after his traumatised child after the unexpected death of his wife. They head to new surroundings in the countryside to make a new start. Life isn't straight forward when the little girls friend Charlie decides to make life difficult! Hide and seek is a enjoyable film with good actors, a great performance from Dakota Flemming as the little girl Emily. The big house in the countryside does feel creepy and sets the right atmosphere for the film especially at night in the darkness and with obscure shadows. A great story with a great ending, well acted and directed, fans of thrillers will love.
The DVD has a commentary by the director, 4 alternative endings all very similar and only affect the very last scene. It has 14 deleted scenes only a couple would have been good to see in the final film. Both the endings and deleted scenes come with optional commentary. There is a short 10 minute making of which has brief comments form the main cast and director. There are also a few ideas that were done on storyboard but not filmed in the previs section. Overall a great film with some good extras 8/10.
