Irish Sunday Times Bestseller

A true story of war, peace and friendship: a Nazi colonel and an Irish priest

The story begins in Rome at the outbreak of WWII, when ardent Nazi Herbert Kappler, SS Obersturmbanführer, and Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty would become adversaries in a real-life game of 'cat and mouse' of epic proportions. Hide and Seek chronicles the intimate and intensely personal war between them. A fiercely fought rivalry that would culminate in failed attempts by Kappler to kidnap and then murder his Irish opponent.

In July 1943 Rome was bombed for the first time during the war. As the swastika flew above the city, it was a time of fear, and a moment of choice: collaborate and compromise, or resist and revolt. O'Flaherty decided to quietly resist and fight the new rulers.

Dubbed 'Ireland's Oscar Schindler', he masterminded a large-scale operation from within the Vatican, to help Jews and escaped Allied prisoners on the run from the Nazis. He used a series of safe houses and church buildings and sheltered around 500 Jews in the Holy See, and it is believed that sanctuary was found for some 4000 Jews across Rome, and 4000 Allied escapees.

After the Resistance killed 32 German soldiers in a bombing, Hitler was enraged, and declared that he wanted a revenge attack to "make the world tremble". He instructed Kappler to draw up plans. Eventually, 335 people would be executed in the Ardeatine Caves, a labyrinth of tunnels outside the city. The massacre would become the worst atrocity committed on Italian soil during WWII.

Kappler's handiwork would remain secret until Rome was liberated by the Allies in June 1944. The Nazi Colonel was found guilty on all the charges relating to the caves massacre. He was sentenced to life imprisonment with no parole. Amazingly, O'Flaherty would continue his relationship with Kappler, going to see his former rival in prison. The discussions of the two men would become intense and searching, and a friendship grew between them. In later life, after much soul-searching Kappler became a Catholic, and was baptised by the Irish Monsignor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Has to be on your bookshelf! 26 Mar 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book was annoying good. It was so fast paced and enthralling that it became a addiction and kept me from sleeping, watching TV and eating.

I couldn't get to bed at night because each page forced me to go to the next page and the page after that. When I got up in the morning I wanted to know what the next page was and I actually took the book with me when I went to leave the kids to school and read the book secretly in the car before I had to go home as I knew I would have to start work at home and the book would be a major distraction.

My wife was cross as I would read it and not come to the table when I was called and I would read it when she was watching her favourite TV shows and got grumpy because I wasn't sharing her shows with her.

What a book! Made all the more fantastic because it is true....

There are history books and there are factually based novels, but this latest book by Stephen Walker combines the literary style of a page turning thriller with a painstakingly researched historical document. Everything in this book is true which makes it all the more enthralling. This is a story of an archetypal villain and an unlikely hero, not motivated by glory or revenge but by a relentless compassion for his fellow man regardless of his race, creed or deeds. In this sense it is story of hope that ends in an unexpected reconciliation. It is also a story about a mans authentic faith as he looked after others in their distress, forgave his enemy and ultimately oversaw his redemption. Stephen Walker also achieves something that previous versions of this story have not, he tells the whole story from beginning to end, and that makes his version not only the most comprehensive, but also unique.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hide And Seek, superb read. 27 Mar 2011
Format:Hardcover
Hide And Seek by Stephen Walker.

Fergal Keane, author and BBC Foreign Correspondent describes Stephen Walkers Hide and Seek as a really thrilling book and in this assertion he is totally correct.

Days after reading it I found myself thinking about and analysing the many emotional responses it evoked within me. The book is well researched and well written and once I picked it up I couldn't put it down. Having watched films associated with Father Flaherty's daring escapades in Rome during the Second World War, when I saw the book on the shelves I didn't think twice about buying it. I wanted to know more about this fascinating human being. I wasn't disappointed. He was truly inspirational and Christian in all whom he came into contact with.

His nemesis SS Lieutenant Colonel Herbert Kappler was also an interesting character. Directly responsible for many of the atrocities carried out in Rome during the war period, his continued justification of being a soldier, having to take orders lead me to be believe that "self delusion" is a human trait easily acquired and latched onto.

One wonders in an era where the Catholic church have come under much attack worldwide over their response and handling of clerical child abuse (and rightly so) why a man of the calibre of Hugh Flaherty has not got more acknowledgement for the thousands of lives he was responsible for saving. The Vatican needs to acknowledge this amazing man.

This is a good story, it's a true story and Stephen Walker tells it very well. I look forward to reading further responses to this inspiring book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A compelling story and an excellent read 19 May 2011
Format:Hardcover
As a full-time professional historian it takes quite a lot to get me to pick up a work of history for pleasure. But I knew Stephen Walker's previous book 'Forgotten Soldiers' and had enjoyed that and so thought I'd delve into this one. I was not at all disappointed. Although the story is not a new one, Walker tells it with a fresh eye and great pace, foregrounding the relationship between O'Flaherty and Kappler. That relationship is a game of 'Hide and Seek' as the title suggests but eventually becomes one of reconciliation. There are gaps in the available primary sources which could have hindered the story-telling. But Walker does very well with what material there is, and he develops his interpretations as far as possible without stepping into speculation. That is a credit to the rigour with which he has approached the subject. The story is a compelling one with much for all to enjoy, from the overall narrative to the asides about O'Flaherty's skill at golf. Overall, this book is an excellent read and I recommend it highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brillant riveting read 18 April 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I had not read any reviews about this book when I picked it up in the bookshop. I chose it because I knew a little through the films made around this dreadful chapter in Italian/German history & I wanted to learn the truth behind those Box-office hits. I wasn't disappointed, Stephen Walker more than fulfilled my expectations. I agree with the previous reviewers it was truly unput'downable, I have just finished it. What Stephen Walker does is to answer all the questions that needed to be answered regarding the motives behind the actions of the two adversaries and what happened them in the years following War. Despite being so detailed I found the book very easy to read.
