When I first heard the album I was immediately struck by the similarities between Matt and Rufus Wainwright. This is not a bad thing however as I consider Rufus to be one of the great under-valued talents of our generation.

Matt Alber can now take his place in that group!

Hide Nothing is an album chock full of beautiful songs about love and life.
The single "End of the World" is one of the songs I would take to a desert island if I had to choose five to listen to for the rest of my life! It never fails to make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up! And for a song to do that EVERY time I listen to it (which is a lot) is truly some achievement.
I have recommended this album to all my friends, both LGBT and straight, as I think the songs speak for anyone in love or suffering a loss of some kind regardless of their gender or persuasion.
If you take only one chance on an unknown artist this year, do yourself a favour, choose "Hide Nothing" by Matt Alber - I promise you won't regret it!

Once a year, an artist and an album come into your life that remind you why music touches the parts other arts cannot reach.

I was introduced to Matt Alver by default. An ex-boyfriend of mine alerted me to the fact that he was doing an appearance at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, wholly convinced that I had made the initial introduction to the artist. I hadn't, but followed the breadcrumbs to You Tube and listened to "The End of the World".

And so the love affair with this artist begins...

Yes...there is a little Rufus in there..."Rufus Lite"..."I can't believe it's not Rufus"...and that's more than OK with me, as a major fan of Mr Wainwright. But there is more...sometimes less...and sometimes less IS more.

The title of this album is wonderfully appropriate. Mr Alber obviously decided to break down any walls to his artistry and let his imagination soar. And soar it certainly does. The lyrics are poetic, but not lost in obscure imagery. The music moves from gentle acoustic to full orchestra, and imbedded in it all is the voice.

Ah, that voice. So pure, perfectly supported, expressive and achingly beautiful. Whereas Rufus tends to throw the vowels through his nose, and bust his lungs in search of the eternal note, Matt just lets it flow from his soul.

I could wax lyrical about every track, as every track merits praise. Each song works in it's own right, and can be listened to individually as part of the whole. I prefer the latter. As with the wonderful work of John Grant, this album leads you on a journey which should be savoured in it's entireity.

Enough.

Just buy it. Listen to it. Love it.

And take that love out into the world...cos it sure needs it at the moment.

And Matt...

Matt Alber sings wonderful songs that relate directly to my experience. I hope he goes on to write and sing much more.

I sat by his piano in the Siteman Cancer Center while he played these tunes and people passing stopped for a while and forgot their troubles. Lovely voice, lovely message, lovely melodies. He just gets straight to your heart.

I came across Matt Alber on YouTube one day when I was idly going through bits and pieces and his song The End of the World nearly brought me to tears. In fact I just can't get it out of my head. The other songs on here are so good and I have the whole album on repeat at night when I am sitting doing other stuff - I simply can't get enough of him. You must just listen to The End of the World and then you will be reaching for the Buy Now button!!
