Book Description

The 2nd Inspector Rebus novel from 'arguably Scotland's finest living writer' The Times --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

A junkie lies dead in an Edinburgh squat, spreadeagled, cross-like on the floor, between two burned-down candles, a five-pointed star daubed on the wall above. Just another dead addict - until John Rebus begins to chip away at the indifference, treachery, deceit and sleaze that lurks behind the facade of the Edinburgh familiar to tourists. Only Rebus seems to care about a death which looks more like a murder every day, about a seductive danger he can almost taste, appealing to the darkest corners of his mind . . .

Expertly written, Rankin intertwines the plot with the development of the characters, creating a sense of "real time" and suspense often so lacking in other mysteries. The reader is left in as much suspense and doubt as Rebus, waiting for the case to be solved. Even if you suspect who's involved in the crime, the complexity of the plot will surprise you and is tantalisingly held back by Rankin until the final pages. I recommend reading "Knots & Crosses" (also superb) first though as some of this story is referred to in "Hide & Seek".

I am a big fan of Rebus - and of anything Ian Rankin writes. Rebus is a believable cop - with lots of personality quirks and a not-so-perfect "home" life. The descriptions of his work environment and the politics involved in being a cop (in any country) are dead-on. Scotland comes alive - its weather, moods, citizens, crime. I highly recommend this book to any reader who is looking for something deep, different, and compelling.

`Hide and Seek' is the second book in the Rebus series. In this novel a young junkie has been found dead in a squat, underneath a drawing of a pentagram. Whilst most don't seem interested in the death, Rebus investigates and uncovers links to the sleazy underbelly of Edinburgh. This novel also sees Rebus make an unusual alliance with a young officer, Brian Holmes.
The new introduction by the author is really interesting as Rankin reflects on his work and points out the flaws that he now sees. It's fascinating to watch the progression of a novelist from their own perspective.

I liked the novel very much. It's short and pacey, but I think that the character and his network develops much further in later novels and is more psychologically and intellectually realistic later on which is why I've only given it three stars. Nevertheless, recommended.

An above average book ruined by a terrible reader.
This is a hard review to do as while the book is certainly not terrible, it is made almost unbearable by the worst piece of reading I have ever heard. Read more

Terrible narration
I have never heard audio-book narration as poor as this.

The second Rebus novel opens with a dead drug addict with pentagrams painted on the walls of the squat. His last warning words were "Hide", or "Hyde". Read more

Not the best
Hide and Seek is, perhaps, not the most technically accomplished crime novel. There are three types of characters. Firstly, we have the police. Read more
