Serenity Makepeace has lived most of her life in the small pioneer town of Witt's End, Washington. To revive a failing economy, she plans to put together a catalogue of town produced products. Caleb Ventress is a start up consultant, one of the best, and certainly more high powered than Witt's End could normally afford. But Serenity is not a conventional woman, and Caleb finds himself intrigued. Until, that is, he finds out Serenity is being blackmailed. After an initial bad reaction that is highly coloured by his own past, Caleb's protective instincts kick in and he's off to Witt's End, to help Serenity and Witt's End.
The story is peopled by some highly unusual characters - Serenity herself is perhaps one of the more conservative people in Witt's End, a town people seem drawn too if they need to recover from modern life. There's a survivalist who is determined to protect the town from an upcoming invasion, a woman with a highly developed sense of intuition who thinks Caleb is bringing disaster with him, and that Serenity has been raised by the town itself following the death of her parents. Until college, for example, she had never been to school but was home schooled.
All of this makes for a very amusing book, one where I often chuckled as I read. These characters certainly came to life. But it is also a romance, and Caleb was given as much time as Serenity and Witt's End, and I found his own tale as interesting. Caleb feels he is fading, becoming a ghost, as he hides behind what is expected of him. He needs the unique sanctuary that is Witt's End as much as any of it's inhabitants.
The mystery 'whodunnit' part was developed well, although those that read mysteries often could probably put it together (isn't that part of the joy of the mystery?).
A very enjoyable book, well balanced and I loved all the eccentric characters.
