Sequencer riffs? Check. Long fluid guitar lines ? Check. Mad spiralling synths? Check. Trippy jazz flute? Check. Interesting dance rhythm patterns? Check. That can only mean one thing: A new Ozric Tentacles album!

Yes, The Hidden Step has an Egyptian theme: Check out "Ashlandi Bol", 'Aramanu' and 'Ta Khut' , all strange, dreamy and other worldly in turn. Yes, Seaweed's keyboard pyrotechnics are all here in tact. Yes, there's the usual club stylee excercise in crescendo on 'Tight Spin'. Yes, there's an embarassment of rhythmic and melodic riches all round.

But what about the guitar playing, right?! While the rate of evolution of the Ozric sound may have slowed, delivering another cosmic workout, it's all about the ever under-rated but brilliant Ed Wynne (see also Jurassic Shift review) and the fact that his playing takes you to the furthest reaches of your mind.

"Holohedron" opens things up with a gradual build on the synths, with Ed holding off just long enough before launching into his 1st solo on the album. It, like the guitar work overall on this album, is inspired, but there's not enough of it! There are other guitar moments littered throughout the album, but it has taken a bit of a back seat on this one. If you've yet to get an Ozrics album, then this is as good a place to start as anywhere, but I'd recommend Jurassic Shift from a guitar POV as essential.

Classic Ozrics 3 Feb 2010
Format:Audio CD
Nothing for Ozrics fans to be afraid of here - the usual mix of soaring guitar work, a driving drum / bass section, sequencers aplenty, the occasional eastern-influenced track and fine, fine musicianship throughout. Exactly what was required. Let's hope they don't ever find a "new direction" or anything...

As usual, the Ozrics carry you off into the furthest reaches of your mind. Brilliant stuff. No lyrics, but listen to them while meditating on transcendental lila literatures such as Mahabharata or Ramayana. It's a mystical journey all the way.
