Daughter of the American playwright Eugene O'Neill, Oona was only 17 when she was signed up by Chaplin in Hollywood. But he was to fall in love with this "luminous beauty", leading her to abandon her planned film career, marry him, bear eight children and provide happiness and support for 34 years until his death in 1977. Drawing on personal recollections of her mother-in-law, Patrice Chaplin explores the personality behind the gentle wife. The story follows Oona through glamorous hotel suites and apartments in London and New York and inside the Chaplin's elegant home in Switzerland where she built a secret, obsessive world as a widow, until the tragic darkness of the O'Neill inheritance finally destroyed her. It provides insights into the world of Hollywood and of the Chaplin family, living in the limelight.
