Review

'What is extraordinary about this little, reissued and much loved classic isnot so much the secret lives of dogs, but the life of the woman who wrote it. . . Is this astonishing woman, who has similiarly observed and writen about warrior herdsmen and cats, barking? I cannot say, but her book is utterly compelling.' I read this book in one sitting, and so has everyone else I have given it to. Elizabeth Marshall Thomas not only has remarkable powers of observation, she also writes beautifully. This is a book that every dog lover should own. Buy a couple -- you will definitely want to pass it on!

an interesting little book, an honestly written account by a woman who decided to simply observe her dogs to see what they wanted out of life, rather in the manner of an informal science experiment.
I found it an enjoyable read, following the story of her domestic dog pack. Inevitably there are moments of sadness, but it is a sympathetically written book I imagine most people who have owned a dog would enjoy.
