Product Description

Outdoes Muriel Spark and Evelyn Waugh' Margaret Drabble, Observer

Accused of child abuse, Father Roger Tree confesses at once; it masks a darker secret. Meanwhile his sister Romola faces a future without their beloved brother, the novelist Hereward Tree. Can she live with the ending of his last book? And then there is Hereward's much younger lover, Carina, who takes fate into her own hands. But it is Betty Winterborne, forced to re-examine the death of her son Mark twenty years before, who has the courage to face the truth.

There are the lies we tell others, and the lies we tell ourselves. This is a story about the difference.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hidden Knowledge 9 Jun 2014
By Susie B TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
Romola Tree is an experienced teacher in her fifties who lives alone, and likes it that way. She is very close to her brother, Hereward, a well-known novelist, who has a much younger Italian fiancee, Carina. At the beginning of the story we learn that Hereward is preparing to go into hospital for a triple heart bypass and although he is expected to survive surgery, both Carina and Romola, who do not really get on well with one another, are united in their concern over the outcome of the operation. The evening before Hereward goes into hospital, Romola receives a visit from her younger brother, Father Roger Tree, who confesses that he has been released on bail from police custody. He goes on to explain how he has been accused of sexually abusing an underage teenage boy ten years ago when he was working in his last parish. When Romola asks Roger why the young man is making this accusation, Roger stuns her by telling her it is because he is guilty of the offence, but Roger is not telling Romola the whole truth and there is a much darker secret that is worrying him...

As Roger has been suspended and cannot stay in the presbytery, he moves in with Romola, hoping that although he has never been as close to her as Hereward, she will help him through this difficult time - however when Hereward's operation is not successful and he lies in hospital in a coma, the family crisis deepens, and Romola finds herself with much more than Roger's problems to cope with. In a parallel story to the Tree family, we meet Betty Winterborne, who has recently been widowed and is struggling to cope with the loneliness caused by her husband's death.

This a very "deep" book, exploring very difficult issues with a great knowledge of human nature's strengths and weaknesses. I am loving it, reading it more slowly at the second time. I look forward to the next novel, finding it difficult to believe in the courage of the author who wrote about painful issues whilst struggling with her own physical pains.

THIS BOOK IS TRULY REMARKABLE. BEAUTIFULLY CONSTRUCTED AND A DELIGHT TO READ. SUCH INSIGHT AND CARE WITH A VERY DIFFICULT AND TENDER SUBJECT MATTER. BERNADINE BISHOP SHOULD BE A DEFINITE MUST FOR TRUE READERS.

4.0 out of 5 stars A multilayered mystery. 30 July 2014
By TINA
Format:Hardcover
A multilayered mystery - lots of interlinked motifs. I was a little disappointed as the story goes from one revelation to the next - but there is room for reflection. The ending is ambiguous as the father could face further legal action from the biggest and most hidden of his mysteries.
The characters were all plausible, except for the Italian girl friend - surely she would not have given way as she did. Overall good, but less fully worked through than Bernardine's previous novel on love.
