Product Description

Product Description

The Handel arias and orchestral pieces on this disc span a narrow spectrum from the comparatively unfamiliar to the practically unknown. Nine of the twelve arias are recorded here for the first time, as is the D major March, HWV 416. The arias are mostly arie aggiunte, composed for insertion in later performances of existing operas to accommodate a different cast of singers. Some of these arias have come to light only recently or have previously been inadequately identified. The interspersed instrumental works were produced for purposes still uncertain. Yet, despite the sometimes shadowy origins of this music, it is all vintage Handel, and arias such as La crudele lontananza , Sa perché pena il cor and Farò così più bella rank among the composer s most eloquent dramatic utterances. The Swedish mezzo-soprano Ann Hallenberg has become established as one of Europe s leading mezzo-sopranos. Her operatic repertoire includes a large number of roles by Rossini, Mozart, Gluck, Massenet, Handel, Vivaldi and Monteverdi. Equally at home on the concert platform, she frequently appears in concert halls and festivals throughout Europe and North America. She has recorded more than 30 CDs and DVDs, most recently, with the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra conducted by Fabio Biondi, a CD of 'Arias for Marietta Marcolini' for Naïve [V5309]. 'Having won plaudits in Handel and Vivaldi, Ann Hallenberg proves no less persuasive in bel canto...her even, gleaming tone, eloquence of prase and fluent, never mechanical coloratura give virtually unalloyed pleasure...few could equal her style, zest and coloratura brilliance.' Richard Wigmore, Gramophone, Jan 2013

Review

Ann Hallenberg is fantastic as always and Il Complesso Barocco really come to life in these unknown works ... a surprising gem of a CD --Violet Greene, Early Music Review April 2013

The majority of these performances are world premieres, Hallenberg deftly negotiating the vagaries of love and war and the whims of gods and sorcerers that furnish the narratives, including the especially poignant 'Sa Perché Pena il Cor' and unusually pitched 'Sento Prima le Procelle'. --Andy Gill, The Independent 10 May 2013

IRR OUTSTANDING it is fascinating to experience the consistency and beauty of Hallenberg s singing and her immaculate musical instincts and technique over a period of ten years ... no lovers of Handel or great Baroque singing should deny themselves the pleasure of this beautiful music sung by a Handelian at the peak of her powers. --Hugh Canning, International Record Review June 2013

DISC OF THE MONTH Musicologically this is a fascinating collection, but more importantly its also a cracking good listen. Hallenburg s is such a malleable instrument, and, with the atmospheric help of Il Complesso Barocco and Alan Cutis s clipped articulation, she takes us from rage to joy in arias that beg for another contemporary pasticcio in the manner of the Met s The Enchanted Island to allow us to hear this music in a dramatic context as well as excerpted in recital. --Alexandra Coghlan, Opera September 2013

CRITICS CHRISTMAS CHOICE It s a rare disc whose concept is as exciting as its execution. Ann Hallenburg, Alan Curtis and Il Complesso Barocco render the familiar fresh with a a collection of substitute arias...It s elegantly conceived as part history lesson, part recital, and succeeds on both levels. --Alexandra Coghlan, Gramophone - December 2013

Here we have a dozen arias by Handel, mostly written for revivals of his operas when a new singer took over a part and needed (or demanded) different music. Such "spare" arias have rarely been performed, and indeed the notes claim nine first recordings here. I reckon the true count is eight, but eight premier recordings are enough to make this an automatic purchase for Handel lovers.

The most interesting are three Handel inserted in Alessandro Scarlatti's opera "Pirro e Demetrio" revived in London in 1716, the only occasion Handel ever wrote extra music for someone else's opera. These were for the castrato Antonio Bernacchi, who had a range of a to f", a perfect match for Ann Hallenberg's voice. She sings them magnificently, beginning the first (on the first track of the disc) with a "messa di voce" - a long-drawn-out note, swelling and fading - which would have delighted Handel himself. Hallenberg is one of the very few contemporary singers who can be expressive without a trace of wobble, and she is very secure in coloratura and ornament. It's a pleasure to listen to her.

There is a "but" however; Alan Curtis does not stick to arias for Bernacchi or Domenico Annibali (range g to g"). He also gives his singer music Handel designed for Anastasia Robinson (d' to a"), Margherita Durastanti (d' to g") and Faustina Bordoni (c' to a"), which is a lot of voice-types for anyone to cover. Hallenberg copes very well. She has sometimes called herself a mezzo, sometimes an alto. I'd call her a Rossini voice - an agile alto with a high extension.

There is already an excellent review here by C Wake to which I have little to add other than to endorse it wholeheartedly. I will just say that I think this is a thoroughly enjoyable and musically excellent disc. Ann Hallenberg has an utterly lovely voice which suits these pieces very well and she has the excellence of technique to make light of their difficulty and to bring out their emotional content. It's exemplary singing in my view, excellently supported by Curtis and the musicians of Il Complesso Barocco.

My advice is to read C Wake's review and, if you have any interest in Handel whatever, snap this up. It's a gem.

Ann Hallenberg is one of my favourite mezzo sopranos of the moment so this disc was never likely to disappoint! Its nicely designed, the arias interspersed with instrumental movements. Hallenberg is in glorious voice, her coloratura smooth and clear and she has a terrific range. All of the pieces were new to me except 'Vinto e amor' from Ottone (I have Lucia Popp singing this) and I particularly enjoyed the slow arias from Rinaldo and the jaunty one from Amadigi. The Scarlatti insertion arias were also excellent. Alan Curtis and his Il Complesso Barocco give excellent support and the whole thing is very enjoyable.

Clever selection of little known arias sung with great style and warm resonance by one of the very best successors to Durastanti.
