I have just been reading about the orchestral variations that were written by Frederick Delius called 'Brigg Fair' and was fascinated by the history behind the work. `Brigg Fair' is an English folk song, Brigg being a market town in North Lincolnshire. It became well known when in the early 20th century, the composer Percy Grainger collected traditional songs from the inmates of the workhouse there. He had made a lot of recordings of performances of folk songs from all over England on wax cylinders, and the one of Joseph Taylor singing `Brigg Fair' still survives and can now even be downloaded as an mp3 file from Amazon complete with crackles and distortion! Grainger arranged the song for tenor soloist and chorus and a few years later, impressed after hearing the piece, Frederick Delius asked Grainger for permission to use the song as the basis for a set of orchestral variations.
It was really amazing to hear the original wax cylinder recording that Percy Grainger made in April 1905 and to be able to download it as an mp3 file! Can't really give it 5 stars, but 4 for historical interest.
