Joyce Holms crime novels featuring two of the most interesting characters in modern crime fiction are a real pleasure to read. I am always on the look out for her next book.
The well drawn characters of Edinburgh lawyers, the unstoppable and volatile Fizz Fitzpatrick and the long-suffering Tam Buchanan who keeps her feet on the ground are always entertaining. The story unfolds with Fizz embroiling Buchanan in a search for her missing friend, who appears to have absconded with a priceless Rubens painting. They chase around the Lothian area outside Edinburgh, following up false leads while the reader is strung out on a tense lead behind them. Hidden Depths like the other Joyce Holms books is full of atmosphere and sense of place as well as understated humour. The byplay between Fizz and Buchanan (where neither of them are aware of the strong attraction existing between them) is one of the author's tours de force. Poor Buchanan is beginning to fight back against Fizz' subtle manipulation. Joyce Holms' gentle humour is a far cry from the angst-ridden detectives created by Ian Rankin and Quintin Jardine. Great escapism and clever plotting.
