Some folks feel that Terry Callier's vocals are almost swamped by the production. Well, via my hifi at least, for the most part Callier's voice sounds as if it's mixed to the fore, while satisfyingly complemented and underpinned by the multi-textured and multi-layered 'Bristol sound', which is either appropriately dynamic or subtly dramatic. However, arguably, the title track's percussion is a tad intrusive?
And with all due respect to Mark Barry's review, Sunset Boulevard is not produced, nor written, by Robert del Naja/Massive Attack, according to the CD's sleeve notes (unless Chris Grabowski is an RdN alias...).
IMHO Callier sings with emotion and conviction and the band's playing is skilled, vibrant and deceptively effortless. The highlight has to be Live With Me, the third of the album's collaborations with Massive Attack, while the remaining songs are equally creative - embracing soul, electronica, blues and funk - yet also accessible.
