Book Description

4 Oct 2007

Devastated by the shocking news that an old school friend, Suzy Palmer, faces execution in Louisiana for the murder of her children, London rabbi, Deborah Hirsch, enlists the aid of her former classmates in an attempt to get her off. She can't be anything but innocent; the Suzy they've known and loved all these years could never hurt a fly.

Aided by Miss Holbrook, Suzy's former art teacher, the friends unite to prove Suzy's innocence. Back and forth across thirty years they slowly piece together what happened.

And even more shocking than Suzy's plight is the knowledge that one of their number has betrayed her.

A gripping and beautifuly contructed story (Elizabeth Buchan)

Skilfully sustains the suspense until the closing pages (The Times)

I was highly disappointed to discover that my prediction as to the killer's identity (formulated by the end of chapter 2) was correct. There was no attempt made by the author to provide an interesting twist or make the ending less obvious. Overall, a weak effort.

1.0 out of 5 stars terrible 17 May 2011
Format:Paperback
This is by far the worst book I have read for many a long year. The plot is so obvious and the narrative long and drawn out. Quite frankly it doesnt deserve one star. As stated in the other reviews there is no twist so you know who the murderer is from very early on and it is so tedious seeing the author slowly put the pages together. Not only that but there are so many outstanding issues at the end that the author doesnt bother to deal with, presumably because she has no real way of working them out. Never again with this author.

3.0 out of 5 stars its ok 10 April 2011
Format:Paperback
I gave this 3 as two star said i dont like it and that is not the case. The only isssue is that there is no real twist, it is made obvious who the killer might be and in fact you will find you were right when 3/4 of the way through if that. Though 3 star as as reading goes, i like, just lacking imagination to who did it. I will probably read other of her books.

3.0 out of 5 stars Agenda not quite hidden enough... 10 Jun 2011
Format:Paperback
The story starts well and I was looking forward to a good read! The characters of the five friends at school and their friendship dynamic really appealed to me. I liked the settings of the story in North London and New Orleans too. But about half-way through the book it all became tedious and the story plodded along to its blindingly obvious grim conclusion. Usually enjoy Carol Smith for a pacy read but I can't give this one more than a generous 3-stars.
