A true star! 20 July 2011
By D. Peak
Format:Audio CD
The works on this disc might seem in prospect to be an odd pairing. But, the more I've listened to this cd the more appropriate the pairing of works becomes.

They are works for solo violin, both requiring intense concentration, intelligence and virtuosity. In Ruth Palmer the works are in safe hands. These are true performances from start to finish with a broad palette of tonal colours and interpretative skills that manage to wrench every ounce of emotion from the pieces as well. Just amazing.

Ruth Palmer seems to suffer with regard to a lower profile compared to other musicians of her generation. Is this because she is primarily a violinist and musician, and one of the very highest order as well, and doesn't seem to play the publicity game, preferring the music to make her case. She is a beautiful girl and could undoubtedly follow other high-profile careers by exploiting her non-musical assets. That she chooses not to is wholly to her credit. She could also choose to play a more commercial repertoire, but in her Shostakovich recording -- and now the Bach/Bartok she has given us recordings to treasure. Both of these recordings are powerful, heartfelt and emotional. I wouldn't part with either. I really love them and I know they will be permanent companions of mine. She really is a star.

The CD is brilliant - the live performance even better. Try to catch Ruth on the 2011 Hidden Acoustics tour, you will be impressed.
