Book Description

12 Feb 2004 Hiccup
Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III was a truly extraordinary Viking Hero. Warrior chieftain, awesome sword-fighter and amateur naturalist, he was known throughout Vikingdom as 'the Dragon Whisperer', on account of his amazing power over these terrifying beasts.

But it wasn't always like that. In fact, in the beginning, Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III was the most put upon Viking you'd ever seen. Not loud enough to make himself heard at dinner with his father, Stoick the Vast; not hard enough to beat his chief rival, Snotlout, at Bashyball, the number one school sport and CERTAINLY not stupid enough to go into a cave full of dragons to find a pet...

Review

I can't praise this wonderful adventure too highly - in fact, for my money, she's the NEXT BIG THING in children's literature... Read with gigantic gusto by David Tennant, and featuring some shatteringly good sound-effects, this kept us all laughing on the edge of our seats for 3 ½ hours. (Independent on Sunday 20040523)

' ... one of the most enjoyable and original children's stories I have heard in a long time ... David Tennant reads with outstanding gusto, giving full and varied wellie to the story's rich assortment of Viking and dragon characters.' (The Independent 20040402)

CHILDREN'S BOOK OF THE WEEK: 'This book is great fun and has a Blackadderish sense of humour ... full of the sort of jokes that will make schoolboys snigger.' (Nicolette Jones, The Sunday Times 20030309)

A super story, inventive, ingenious, perpetually surprising. One to cherish. (Armadillo, Spring 2003 20030309)

A wonderfully wittily written and illustrated story. (Waterstones Quarterly Magazine 20030401)

[Cressida Cowell] puts a contemporary spin on the old brains over brawn moral and brings the story to a climax with a thrilling dragon duel. Lots for lots of different readers to enjoy. (Books for Keeps 20030501)

... raucous and slapstick... liberally illustrated with [Cressida Cowell's] riotous drawings, notes and maps. (The Financial Times 20030405)

How to Train Your Dragon is a delightful narrative caper... It offers a challenging read to 11-year-olds, and rewards reading aloud, especially for those who relish an element of theatre at story time. (Lindsey Fraser, Sunday Herald, Glasgow 20030406)

From the Publisher

* A Viking Molesworth in the form of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III.
* A very funny adventure story as Hiccup finds a dragon, trains it and, with its help, manages to subdue two enormous monstrous Sea Dragons. In doing so, he also conquers his bullies, gains the respect of his family and schoolmates and shows his tribe that there can sometimes be more than one way of doing something...
* Written as though by Hiccup, with an author's preface and notes throughout the text, interspersed with his own sketches (black and white line illustrations by Cressida Cowell) as Hiccup builds up more helpful reference material for future Viking heroes (the only existing guide to training dragons has three words of text: Shout At It). A similar playfulness and intertextuality as The Stinky Cheese Man.
* Perfect for boys, with lots of humour, dragons, bloodshed, gob and battles.
* Following in the footsteps of Lauren Child with her Clarice books, developing picture book character with real potential to take on a life of his own and bring him to a wider, broader audience, by an author who can work brilliantly on a variety of levels.

5.0 out of 5 stars stupendously funny and good 11 Mar 2004
By A. Craig HALL OF FAME TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Audio Cassette
My son, aged 8, was in danger of Giving Up Reading until he discovered this wonderful book - having raced through other magical tales by Eva Ibbotson, Tolkien's Farmer Giles of Ham and Harry Potter. He bascially won't read anything unless it has a dragon in it, which is why we fell on this with such relief.
The story, about a thoughtful, polite boy born into the Hooligan tribe of Vikings, who have to capture then train their dragon by yelling at it is not only very funny but has good things to say about the importance of jokes, persuasion and daring to stand up against the mob. The audio version, read with enormous verve and featuring terrific music and sound effects as the Green Death rises from the sea-bed to devour the tribes, is absolutely spell-binding. I can't recommend it too highly, especially for long journeys. More, please!

I read this book on my holidays. I liked it so much that when I came home I read it again.

This is the funniest book I've ever read. It tells the story of Hiccup, the boy Viking, and his dragon, Toothless. Lots of silly and scary things happen to them. I really liked the bit when Toothless spoke in Dragonese. E.g. 'Mi Mama no likeit yum-yum on di bum' (My mother does not like to be bitten on the bottom). I also liked the pictures.

I can't wait for another book about Hiccup and Toothless!

Mum & Dad loved this too - a classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant book for any age 24 Feb 2006
Format:Paperback
The great thing about this book is its so unique its perfect for any age. I teach Year 6, and often recommend this to children who have a low reading age for an 11 year old, as its timeless. they don't find it patronising, as it could just as easily have been written for an adult, a teenager or a 7 year old. Hilarious, strangely endearing, completely bizarre and yet so strangely believable. Captures the imagination, because lets face it everyone likes to believe in dragons! The child like scrawl of illustrations are infinitely relatable to kids, a little gem
