Book Description

THE CARL HIAASEN OMNIBUS More than just an awesomely good crime writer, Carl Hiaasen is a comic genius. From his brilliantly black-humoured debut with Tourist Season to the scalpel-sharp satire of Skin Tight, Carl Hiaasen's first three Florida-based thrillers created a whole new category of crime fiction. Collected here for the first time, they represent a white-knuckle ride through parts of the American Nightmare that other writers have never even dreamed of. Or as America's leading satirist P. J. O'Rourke puts it: 'Reading Carl Hiaasen will do more to damage the Florida tourist trade than anything except a visit to Florida.' SKIN TIGHT 'Hiaasen brings classic farce to the modern thriller' Evening Standard DOUBLE WHAMMY 'An outrageously entertaining high-protein experience' Observer TOURIST SEASON 'The funniest writer working in America today' Independent 'Beefier than a barrel-load of Bookers' Time Out 'Better than literature' P. J. O'Rourke

Format: Paperback
If you have ever enjoyed any Carl Hiaasen novels about the abuse that Florida's environment has taken from developers, crooked politicians and ne'er-do-wells of all kinds, Double Whammy is one of his finest accomplishments. That's primarily due to Mr. Hiaasen's loving introduction of his great comic (and tragic) character, Skink. Early in the book, Skink (who appears in so many later novels in the series) joins the story as he combines to help R. J. Decker find out how a famous fisherman has been cheating in bass fishing contests. In fact, this book has more Skink in it than any other Hiaasen novel. If you are a Skink fan, this is a five-star effort.
The book's premise turns out to be but a red herring for a more sinister plot that soon threatens both Skink and Decker.
Mr. Hiaasen's rapier-like wit leaves his targets walking around with their heads cut off without realizing it, as they do one foolish thing after another that lead them to their inevitable doom. Some of the targets include unethical real estate developers, television evangelists, bass fishermen, sporting event sponsors and the idle rich. If you enjoy seeing any of those pilloried, this is a fine book for you.
The book contains one of the most diabolical dispatching of a villain that I have ever read. It's a masterpiece.
The book does have a drawback. Mr. Hiaasen seems to have fallen in love with his story. After the premise is confounded, the story takes too long to develop. It becomes a page turner . . . not because you cannot wait to get to the next part, but because you want the book to reach its inevitable end sooner.

Never before has the publishing world combined their literally minds and marketing talent to bestow upon the public such a benevolent gift. Surely, The Carl Hiaasen Omnibus--a combination of three brillant novellas, layered with modern day wit, charm and tact, will be remembered by the public as a watershed act of chartiy and by the publisher's shareholders as a momentous act of stupidity. Tourist Season, Double Wammy and Skin Tight offer the first time reader of Hiaasen a plethora of material to indulge in at a bargain basement price. I truely believe the publisher made a mistake by offering such wonderful gems under the same title cover without charging a premium. Readers will find themselve's staying up later than normal, ignoring loved ones more than normal and regretfully, sitting on the toilet longer than normal, while trying to finish this magnum opus of a page turner. Not since the edition of the Bible has a collection of stories been able to command such attention from the wall-eyed masses. It almost leads one to believe that this literay thriple threat was the result of divine intervention. Why, you ask? Because how else can one explain the fact that The Carl Hiaasen Omnibus was written by...Carl Hiaasen. This fact is a truely coincidential event in modern history, one that rivals the death of Jesus and the conspicuous birth of Christianity. But, before asking any more questions, read the book. You will come away blessed for life.

Carl Hiaasen's Omnibus 18 Jun 2009
By Ginette Sheridan Evans - Published on Amazon.com

I had no idea that this book existed! I was looking for a copy of "Tourist Season", my all-time favorite Carl Hiaasen book, and I discover it bound with my second favorite, "Double Whammy"!! Who could ask for anything more???!!! Hiaasen has the most wonderfully dark humor and an assortment of believably bizarre characters whose disturbing interactions are what create the story that is too good to put down. Hiaasen is the consumate rebellious environmentalist! The fact that "Skintight" was the third book in this collection is just the icing on the cake.Do yourself a favor...discover Florida native Carl Hiaasen's not-so-subtle and well-placed animosity about the destruction of what he loved about Florida through his colorful characters. Caution: Contents of Hiaasen's books may be addictive!

This made a great gift for my friend, who had never experienced the pleasures of reading Carl Hiaasen. I wanted her to read the first three in order. She lives in Florida and this should be required reading for all Floridians!

The book came when the seller said it would arrive and was in good condition.

The book arrived in very good condition. Looked like new. It arrived a couple days later than anticipated, but since it was coming from England,it was understandable and was not a problem.
