Great sound but the the plastic tube around the cable into the earpiece has worked loose on my pair so they might not be as durable as they appear. Still worth getting for the sound though.

I am not so pleased that I now have to send them back to Hifiman in the USA for replacement though! Apparently neither Amazon or their reseller 'Advanced MP3 Player' are responsible for replacing faulty units supplied through the 'Fulfilment by Amazon' service, whose only benefit to the customer it seems is getting the goodies to you faster! So much for the convenience of on-line shopping!

These are absolutely perfect earphones to me, that meet all my needs after extensive searching. I have had pairs worth hundreds of pounds and they weren't any better than this. The sound is balanced, detailed and with a wide soundstage. These aren't overly excited earphones, heavily bassy or deeply analytical, instead they present the sound as it is which is all I ask. The earphones seem robust and fit comfortably. They are supplied with a latex case and extensive eartips in black latex rubber and clear silicone. Unlike many earphones I did not find the tips irritating, They take Comply 400 foam sleeves if desired too. The connector is a normal one (unlike the previous Hifiman earphones) with an angle. The earphones work under or over ear, I didn't notice any microphonics of the cable rubbing. For a good quality set of earphones that reproduce sound accurately without costing hundreds, these seem to be a go-to set. Remember that tip selection makes a massive difference so do experiment until you find the sound and fit you like. Hifiman are continuing to evolve these earphones in terms of supplied accessories, the rubber housing of the earphones to ensure their quality.

I know that running in earphones is more about the listener than the device, but it seemed to me the sound did settle from a flat, bassy heavy initial signature to the balanced, natural sound with some presence (in terms of separation and instrument placement). So although it may be our ears adjusting rather than some actual physical change, I still recommend giving these some time.

You get a precise, defined sound, with flat neutral response the frequency range. A pleasure to listen to the details of your music.
The bass and highs are well defined and really great to listen to, but the main quality of these is the mediums, which are just perfect.

All of this is consistent considering it's single drive IEMs, don't expect anything much different if you're looking into audiophile earphones.

They come in a hard box, with a few earbuds so you can find which ones work best for you, and provide the best insulation.
For me the standard ones were perfect already. The cable seems ok, but maybe could have been a bit better.

I've had around 7 or 8 IEMs around the past few years at prices equal or inferior to these.
Never have I been this satisfied at the first listening.

I really think these are the best IEMs you can get for that price.

Introduction & Background:
HiFiMAN is a Chinese manufacturer of high performance headphones and portable audio products. It was founded in 2007 by Dr. Fang Bian. I ordered the HiFiMAN RE-400 Waterline In-Ear Monitor (IEM) from Amazon, US and it was shipped out to my Rockledge, US address by Head-Direct. This IEM cost USD105 inclusive of shipping.

I've had various In Ear Monitors (IEMs) over the years from stock freebies to aftermarket brands such as UE, Sennheiser, V-Moda, Sony, Bose etc. to name a few. I've never taken IEMs very seriously as they are supposed to be 'fun on the go' and they are normally played through cheap non-audiophile grade mobile phones or mp3 players. After a few months of little use they either get lost, damaged, given away or returned within the very first month. Unfortunately, I just cannot stand any IEM sticking inside my ears for more than 30 mins, at a time, regardless of how good they sound.

I was recently in the lookout for an IEM to replace my Bose IE2. The Bose IE2 was a fun IEM that I used during workouts and evening walks. It did not stick deep inside my ear canals and were really comfortable to wear for longer periods of time. It is a very cleverly designed IEM that was somewhere between an IEM and over the ear headphone by design and comfort. The sound from the Bose IEM is not the best I've heard and I kept them only because of the comfort they offered. The IE2's cables started to wear out despite good care and it was about time to replace them.

After a lot of search and research I came across this Chinese brand HiFiMAN that is currently creating ripples amongst headphone audiophiles. I was initially attracted to their RE-Zero IEMs that were selling for as low as USD70 at Audio Advisor.

Well worth £60.

Aesthetically - Quality materials used to make what is a very pleasing looking earphone on the eye. Very light but nowhere near flimsy looking and look like they are built to last.

Fit - Very snug, comfortable. They block out noise far better than i expected. There is a little cable noise when not playing music, but none when you are.

Before i go into the sound, let it be known I am no a techy, i just know what i personally like and look for and I'll try describe what i hear as best as possible...

Sound - At first I was a little disappointed as they weren't as warm sounding as i hoped they'd be having read reviews. I use AKG K451s which are GREAT headphones, probably the best I've ever had. With this in mind i couldn't help but compare the two... which was unfair as they are two very different products. I went though my Queen FLAC remasters as I'm a Queen fanatic and know every little sound be it vocals, guitars, bass, etc etc. and where they appear on the sound stage. i was happy to find everything in place and could hear some little bits that I hadn't noticed before, which is the fun part of knew earphones. BUT I also couldn't hear little bits that i could with my AKG 451s.

They also sounded a little dry, even aggressive and a bit harsh AT FIRST. This may be down to being a more neutral earphone. The bass is there but it's on par with all the rest of the music, nothing stands out more than anything else. Which is a good thing as they are clearly picking up what was intended in the recording. Again, my AKG 451s have a lot more bass which results in a fuller warmer sound imo.

Bass is nice but if you like LOTS of bass these may not be for you...
