Product Description

HiFiMAN reference grade gold! The HE-500 is one of HiFiMAN's best performing planar magnetic designs yet its 89dB sensitivity is higher than similar designs and allows it to be driven with a conventional headphone amplifier. The HE-500 offers impressive frequency response from 50Hz to 50KHz and with all of the dynamics and lifelike realism that HiFiMAN headphones are famous for. Features HiFiMAN HE-500 Mobile Audiophile Sound Techpowerup Editor's Choice Reference-Grade Sound Quality Planar-Magnetic Drivers Create Superior Sound Easy to Drive with Standard Headphone Amplifiers Adjustable Headband & Rotating Earcups for Perfect Fit High-Quality Dual-Sided Cable for Even Sound Delivery Large Earpads for Extended Comfort Frequency Response: 15 to 50 KHz Impedance: 38 Ohm Efficiency: 89 DB Weight: 502 g Details Dr.Fang Bian has struck yet again with his most recent HiFiMAN HE-500 'Orthodynamic' reference headphones. Sporting slightly easier-to-drive efficiency and sensitivity specs versus its stunning but power-hungry HE-6 planar magnetic cousin the HE-500 produces a crystal-clear tone full of suppleness and warmth while not missing detail or authority at edges of the frequency range. A perfectly floating spacious soundstage dimension beckons classical and symphonic audiophiles while cogently reproduced instrumental body ensures jazz fans

So, I like headphones, I have listened to and bought a number of them over the years but these are the most impressive and the most expensive in my collection.

I didn't buy these from Amazon, I imported them direct from the manufacturer.

One thing I should start by saying is that these came with the travel case a semi rigid case used to transport the headphones day to day. Some people have received these headphones with the hard wooden case. In the case were two sets of ear pads, velour and leather. Also included is a spare set of plugs for wiring you own cable.

These headphones initially can be uncomfortable, The clamping force over the ears can be quite high but this can be changed by slightly bending back the headband.

That said these are not light.

The the comfort is fantastic, I love the way he ear pads feel (I use the velour ones) around my ears. The most astonishing thing about these headphones is of course the sound. The bass is truly remarkable, For the first time I felt true bass in a headphone. The staging is truly amazing you can easily place every single instrument both in Pop and classical pieces. The midrange and treble are excellent as well these, headphones really have to be heard to be believed. That is where the difficulty lies, it's almost impossible to audition these headphones, I bought them on based on lots of positive reviews.

These headphones benefit from high-end sources, using compressed music will not help you realise the true potential, I have used this with SACDs into a separate headphone amplifier and they sound great.

Make these your 'appointment to listen' headphones, I have. I don't use them every day but on special occasions when I have time to spend to enjoy the sound and the feel these babies can give you.

They really do give me Goosebumps every time I use them.

I went into headphones reluctantly, for the sake of marital harmony: but by now I'm using headphones even when she's away. I've been through Audio Technica ATH-M50, Sennheiser HD 650 and AKG 701/2 'phones, and now ended up with these Hifiman HE-500's. The M50's were good entry all-rounders and value for money, but limited: the HD 650's were very disappointing in their colouration and veiling: the AKG's were good and faithful in their accuracy, but they did get a little bit boring. The HE-500's, however, after taking the plunge and lobbing out rather a lot of shekels, have turned up trumps, giving splendid soundstage and definition as well as accuracy, but also adding that all-important excitement and involvement. Almost as good as my Etymotic ER-4S in-ear phones! And that's coming straight out of the box, before the recommended 150 hours lead-in. These cans are heavy and I was warned that they are uncomfortable to wear for prolonged periods of listening, but I have found them quite agreeable on my oversized head. Tiny grumps are the plastic braiding does give a little microphonic irritation when rubbed together, and one of the screw-on tags connecting the lead to the phones was cross-threaded and I had to do some wiggling about with pliers. Also the braiding began unravelling and I had to stop it with Sellotape. Could have expected better component quality at this price! But all in all an excellent purchase, and well worth the money if you want excellence in sound.

Update 06/07/2014. These cans have had their run-in now. I was quite impressed with them right from the start, out of the box, but you know, they were just a little bit better than the AKG's, nothing all that special really ... wonder if they were really worth the price increase ... well, be patient!
