Product Description

The NIX N' EASY X15B is an easy to use, extra-large plug and play frame. Featuring a huge Hi Resolution 15 inch LCD Active Matrix screen and a 4GB USB Flash Memory Drive. The X15B is capable of playing photos (JPEG), video (MPEG-4 / .AVI) and music (MP3). A remote control with easy short cut buttons allows you to switch from playing photos to video to music with just a single touch of the remote. This frame is designed to be easy to use whilst packed with features. The Split screen display option will display four different photos simultaneously on the large screen. The X15B now also sports the new 'Combo' feature that allows you to place specifically chosen images and music together in a single folder, thus allowing you to essentially create a specific soundtrack for a specific slide show. Ideal for showing off that holiday you just got back from! Also featured is a shuffle display option and standard VESA holes for wall mounting. An excellent frame for presentations and commercial displays.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great product 8 Nov 2011

I was a little bit nervous buying this photo frame, I'm not a fan of buying brands I'm not familiar with that I can't go and play with in the shops. However this frame was a very pleasant surprise.

I have 2 Sony 7" frames myself, but was buying this as a gift. Resolution is most important to me and I like the ability to play music and video but that is secondary to me. I like the 7" frames, they are a great size for sitting on your desk at work, or anywhere you will be close to it. However I think they are too small for good display in say the living room or places you are moving around so I wanted to get something larger.

The good points:
- it's a large picture with good resolution, the detail looks great. (It's not HD, but it doesn't claim to be)
- simple to use, just stick a memory card in and your away (or load them onto the frames memory), if you're have trouble, the Nix website is rather helpful.
- you can split the screen to do different things, you can set particular music to groups of photos.
- very good viewing angle from left to right (not so great from below)

The not so good points:
- the resolution is good, but the colour is not the best, maybe I've been spoiled because I'm used to watching Bluray on my HD TV these days and I have an LED computer monitor but the picture frame is a little washed out. Still good, just not great - very good in comparison to some other frames I've played with.
- Video playback can be a bit tricky. Again there is a converter program and tips on the Nix website, also can be an issue if you've been filming in HD resolution without thinking about it and then expect them to play back. It's a good function to have but you need to think about the video format and resolution.

I bought the X15A for a specific purpose - to end the era of creating paper albums (about 15 running feet of binders) and, from now on, create digital ones which would display on this photo frame at a similar size to the paper ones. This means going through the photos, weeding out duffers, cropping, merging etc and adding explanatory text; the results are saved as 1024x768 JPG files to suit the spec. of the frame.

A major apparent advantage of this frame was its capability to accept USB and SD input. My entire photo album to date will fit on an 8GB SD card - so I thought I'd add the old archive as well as my new "photologs". Imagine my disappointment when, with about 3.5GB of photos on an SD card in the slot, the frame took nearly two minutes to show the first picture (of its choosing and not the first one in the first folder) and then another nearly two minutes to display a picture of my choosing!

There followed a long and friendly email exchange with one of Nix's technical advisors, accompanied by a significant amount of diagnostic work on my part - and growing understanding on theirs - before we finally reached the conclusion that the frame's chip design is optimised to display UNEDITED pictures on an SD card straight from a camera. Change them in any way - including reducing the size to fit the frame's 1024x768 spec and it suffers from thrombosis. It would appear that it has to examine every non-standard picture before committing itself to showing any - and that takes an inordinate amount of time. By the look of the blogs, this problem is not confined to the NIX frame - other manufacturers have the same problem and some won't even display edited pictures at all.

3.0 out of 5 stars Let down by the poor design of the stand 18 Mar 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this to use in my living room, wanting something bigger to replace an eight inch Sony picture frame that I have had for a couple of years. By comparison, the Sony picture is noticeably brighter which allows it to show a wider range of photos. The Sony is small but it is more visible from across the room. With the Nix, you really need to select nice bright colourful pictures for it to work well from any distance. Maybe not such as bad thing.

Although, on the second page on the setup menu there are options for brightness and contrast, it isn't a fix for the above.

Also on the second page there is an option for automatic on and off.

****
Update: after playing around I have cracked the brightness problem. The Nix has to be looked at directly or from above, then the picture looks great. The problem is that if you have it on the stand which comes with it, it leans back, and you can't see any dark colours. It needs to be vertical at least. An option is to fix it to a wall using the pre-moulded screw fixings (tricky unless there's a nice way to hide the flex) or it needs a different stand. Looking around, I've found a simple Ikea steel bookend that with a couple of holes drilled in it will make a solid stand to support it vertically on a table top. Using the same fixings as the stand provided, it works very well
****

It was very easy to load it up with pictures - plug in the USB to the PC and the frame shows up on the PC as external folders that you can copy pictures, videos and music to.

The setup UI is crude. For example to set the date/time, you have to first navigate to the first part of the date, then set it, then press enter, then navigate again to the next part and keep repeating until all parts are set.
