Prior to recording this album, REO Speedwagon had been around for many years having a measure of success in their American homeland. This album took their career to a much wider audience at home while gaining international recognition for them, including the first two of their three UK hits.
About half the tracks climbed high in the American charts, with Keep on loving you hitting the very top - it also made the UK top ten. Take it on the run, also a huge American hit, made the UK top twenty. Don't let him go and In your letter were among the other American hits. The music is almost relentlessly up-tempo.
Any group that has such a long career (and plenty that don't) inevitably go through personnel changes. The line-up that recorded this album was Kevin Cronin (lead vocals, guitar), Gary Richrath (lead guitar), Alan Gratzer (drums), Neal Doughty (keyboards) and Bruce Hall (bass guitar). Kevin's strong but well-controlled vocals backed by the superb musicianship of the other members made this album a classic.
Good as their other albums are (at least the ones I've heard including Good trouble and Wheels, the two that followed this one), this is the album for which REO Speedwagon will be remembered for in America (where it was the biggest selling rock album of 1981) and elsewhere (where it gave them recognition that they previously didn't have).
If you only buy one REO Speedwagon album, make it this one - even ahead of a hits collection. Most of their greatest hits are here.

This masterpiece by REO Speedwagon has been out since 1980 and been reviewed many times so I'm not going to give a track by track review here.

However what I will do is give my opinion about this particular version the Sony 'Mastersound' edition.

Sadly long out of print, Sony inherited the Mastersound concept from CBS records which it swallowed up many moons ago. Originally Mastersound releases were on Vinyl rather than on CD and were of a superior quality to regular releases. They
were a premium quality, often reverting to the original master tapes and utilising virgin vinyl rather than the recycled dross
common at the time.

Naturally sound quality was considerably improved but at a price premium.

Sony continued the concept into the CD age with a series of releases from artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Boston and even Pink Floyd (Wish You Were Here).

Mastersound CD releases are designed to sound superior to the then standard releases as they utilised the following features:

1) The Original Master Tapes of the release were sourced ensuring the best possible starting point, rather than relying on some multiple copied tape. After all if the source is no good no post production will improve that.

2) The mastering involed some then revolutionary Sony technology called Super Bit Mapping or SBM to ensure the best reproduction en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Bit_Mapping

3) The actual disc is manufactured to much higher tolerances than standard CD's and is 24kt gold plated rather than using standard Aluminium. This has the advantages of better reflectivity and greater resistance to tarnish.

All of these factors are meant to add up to superior quality over the standard release.

This takes me back. When I was a teenager, I generally preferred US based rock music [Boston, Styx, Kansas etc] to our home grown acts. I was aware of REO Speedwagon but this album was the first I heard - it was their first to make an impact on UK listeners.

The song on the album that everyone seemed to be listening to was 'Keep on Loving You', which reminds me a bit of Foreigner. I am glad to say that the rest of the album is just as enjoyable. I am finding myself playing the whole album every other day at the moment.

There is plenty of variety of styles on show here. 'Keep on Loving You' and 'Take it on the Run' [which are very similar] are both very catch pop/rock tracks. 'Don't Let him Go' sounds a little like Fleetwood Mac. 'In your Letter' is in an enjoyable doo-wap song and the closing song, 'I Wish you were There' is quite gospel-like in style. The other songs are heavier and more rock and roll in style.

Sometimes it doesn't do to revisit stuff that you enjoyed in your youth. I sometimes cringe at the naff lyrics and sounds of some bands. I have not had that experience with this album. It doesn't sound particularly dated to me either - I really enjoyed it.

i bought this originally on vinyl, which i still proudly own. when cds came out it was one of the first albums i bought. i cannot express enough the contents of this cd, every single track is exceptional, which cannot be said about most cds! i have been looking for a copy for my son, who feels the same as i do. this cd once heard will be played innumerable times, one just never tires of it. i speak with over 20 years experience, what better recommendation could you want? i do not usually voice my oppinions but feel this cd is worthy of every bit of praise possible.
