I found out about Hexbug Nanos through a tech website. I bought this set and my sons and I opened it as a joint present after the big Christmas presents had been played with a few days after Christmas.
What excellent fun, the little bugs are just an off-set motor in a sexy body with some specific design to ensure they walk and can self-right themselves, but for all intents and purposes they look like they've got some intelligence.
The actual maze/arena that came with the set was very limited and interest only lasted for a few minutes. It was when we combined the Hexbugs with a load of Lego Duplo and made a very big maze that the nanos came in to their own. They wizzed all over the place "exploring" the maze and the boys loved watching them and helping them out if they ever got stuck (very infrequently).
Make sure you get some spare batteries because they don't last that long.

My son received this in his stocking this year and while initially nonplussed, has been delighted with it. He also had 2 other Nanos to join the single one included in the set, and I strongly recommend this as they are even better in gangs!
The Nanos razz around the (small) habitat at speed, and seem fairly robust. Their 12 colored legs are decorative only so no real concerns about snagging and breaking them. the habitat is quite limited, but has inspired my son (7.5yrs) to construct a toilet roll creation for them which works well.
A gimmick? Absolutely, but great fun, no trouble or mess, and doesn't take up a load of space. Makes a superb gift for parties, and is far more portable and appealing to an older age group than the multitudes of rodent interactive pets!
I'm sure we'll end up expanding the habitat, but son is first experimenting with Lego!

I purchased this for my grandson 6yrs....he loved it initially, but his interest soon waned....the bugs are fun, but you need one of the bigger kits and more bugs to really enjoy.
