Book Description

1 April 2010 Hex Hall
In the wake of a love spell gone horribly wrong, Sophie Mercer, a sixteen-year-old witch, is shipped off to Hecate Hall, a boarding school for witches, shapeshifters and faeries. The traumas of mortal high school are nothing compared to the goings on at "Freak High." It's bad enough that she has to deal with a trio of mean girls led by the glamorous Elodie, but it's even worse when she begins to fall for Elodie's gorgeous boyfriend, Archer Cross, and frankly terrifying that the trio are an extremely powerful coven of dark witches. But when Sophie begins to learn the disturbing truth about her father, she is forced to face demons both metaphorical and real, and come to terms with her own growing power as a witch.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Love the Pink Vamp ! 25 July 2010
Format:Hardcover
Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins I heard about this book and the story sounded fun, so with difficulty I was able to order a hard copy of the book from the US and sat back to wait for it to arrive.

So last week it arrived, upon opening it I discovered a nice book , I started reading it and yes it is good, it is very easy reading with a fast flowing story line, nice bits of female teenage humour scattered about, the plot builds up to a climax with a few surprises that I will not mention.

One of my favourite characters in the book has to be the 15 (forever) vampire girl Jenna who is very much into pink inc pink fairy lights by her bed, I do hope she will also be in the next book as she is too good for just one book.

You can read more about the plot and the main character Sophie (Witch) in other reviews with this one all I am saying is that it is a very good read so just go out buy yourself a copy and enjoy a good book.

5.0 out of 5 stars It was full of Witchy Awesomesauce!! 10 Jan 2013
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Oh my, Hex Hall, what can I really say about Hex Hall to truly convey my feelings?? It was freaking full of awesomesauce. It was perfection. I don't have a single bad word to say about this witty and clever tale. And why have I only just read it I hear you ask? Well I have absolutely no idea.

Sophie is a witch but lives with her non-magical mother. After a love spell goes wrong she is sent to Hecate Hall where she embarks on quite an adventure. On her first day she manages to piss off a coven of dark witches, nearly gets attacked by a werewolf and is embarrassed by a warlock when he points that she isn't a very good witch. And as she starts to settle into school life, a teenager is murdered and the suspect is Sophie's only real friend who happens to be a vampire. Not to mention she is falling for Archer (the warlock who call her out on her first) who just happens to be the head of covens boyfriends.

The characters in this book are some of the best characters I have came across in a YA in a long time. Sophie is kickass and hilariously funny and very strong willed. Her best friend Jenny, I love her. She is the only vampire in Hecate and they make a good pair. And come on a vampire that love pinks? Won me over. Now Archer, he is a very intriguing character. I couldn't help but swoon over him. Why he was with Elodie I didn't understand. Elodie is an utter bitch. I want to slap her so hard on more than one occasion but it made for excellent reading.

Hex Hall has a little bit of every thing that I love in a YA read. An action packed storyline, a kickass Heroine, laugh out loud humour and oh yeah, witches, vampires, shape shifters. And a perfect setting, a boarding school, I'm a sucker for story set in boarding schools.

3.0 out of 5 stars A fairly enjoyable read 11 April 2010
Format:Paperback
This debut novel from Rachel Hawkins is hilarious! The character Sophie is funny and invigorating, with a wit and personality that attracts rather than repels. Her humour is especially amusing, and her fresh, vibrant voice captured me from the very first page. Sophie was such a loveable, enjoyable character at times I wanted to yank her out of the pages and transform her into someone I could physically interact with! Which says a lot since Sophie isn't even my favourite character - Jenna the vampire is. Unique, extremely loveable and very pink - although she is anything but a barbie girl.

Sophie and Jenna aside, I felt that the novel was a gentle read. The plot was not as complex as other fantasy novels and the creepy factor was either eliminated or toned down. Its occasional distinctions from conventions were, I felt, slightly on the safe side and were crafted to be easily understandable for younger readers. I should say Hex Hall definitely seemed to be aimed for slightly younger teens - though I must also add that I enjoyed it no less.

The book also features mystery and a dash of romance. I like how the plot reflects a weave of all these themes together; not one is dominated by the other. I was not suffocated by the mystery surrounding Hex Hall but only intrigued. The addition of romance in times where the tension settled was a well welcomed distraction. Sophie's wit and hilarious sarcasm thrown to the unavailable campus crush, Archer Cross, creates a wonderful blend of romance.

Although I was very much interested in the mythology Hawkins drew, I was not entirely fascinated by it. I did not 'ooh' or 'aah' at any particular points in terms of the descriptions and I wanted more details at most parts of the novels.

3.0 out of 5 stars A refreshing supernatural series. 14 April 2011
Format:Paperback
After seeing so many good reviews about this book, I thought it was time I read it. Seems as though its had been sitting on my shelf for nearly 2 months. Although, I didn't think this book was amazing, I still really enjoyed it and rated it 3.5 stars.

Sophie Mercer - a witch, moves to Hecate Hall after casting a love spell that goes wrong for a girl from her old school. She has been sentenced to spend the next 2 years at Hecate so she can learn to control and use her powers so she doesn't expose them to humans.

Once Sophie arrives, everything is not as simple as she once thought. She gets roomed with the only vampire on campus, girls are being killed by an unknown murderer, she gets tricked into joining a coven and ends up falling for the wrong guy. There are secrets running all over the school and Sophie for one, is determined to find out what's going on.

I found this book a light enjoyable read. There wasn't anything confusing in the story and it seemed to work out pretty well in the end. I liked reading about Hecate Hall, and loved how all the other supernatural creatures were introduced.

I thought all the characters, especially Archer were fantastic and I can't wait to read more on him and his story. I'm also glad that there was a back story to how Sophie got her powers, I enjoyed reading about her ancestors and look forward to finding out more on her father.

The only thing I wished, would of been different in this story, was for a little more romance between Sophie & Archer and maybe seeing Sophie use her powers a little more than she did.

Overall though, I enjoyed it enough to read the sequel and I look forward to seeing what happens next with the characters.
