Firstly, no one will ever steal it off your desk! That's partly because no-one else will have one so you'll know it's yours and secondly, no-one else will know how to use it because it's Reverse Polish Notation and doesn't have an "=" key.
But seriously, this is a design classic which does 99% of everything that most people will ever need. The unusual landscape key layout is quirky but logical. When you get used to it, you'll never want to go back. It's expensive, but also durable. Battery life is also pretty good.
It will also go on forever. I know someone who still uses the one he bought when he first started work - it's a 10C that's now 30 years old and still works perfectly.

I have been an owner of the HP 12c for almost 20 years now. The price seems high compared with the state of the art graphics calculators available and much of the financial functionality is surpassed by spreadsheet applications. However, as a ready and portable cross check it still works for me. This is a premium product at a premium price and truly classic piece of kit. I wouldn't be without one.

Keep On Keeping On

Just as cited by several of the other reviewers, the HP12c has served me well for over twenty-five years. Its daily use requires a battery change in a year or two. Otherwise the HP12c has been without one problem the entire time; and it is wearing very well. There are no signs of age in any aspect. One of a few products anymore that is built to last; and is fully functional as it was on day one. A very classic product, and enduring value. Highly recommended.

There's a reason this is a true classic

I've used the HP 12-C financial calculator virtually every day since I finished my MBA twenty-five years ago. In fact I've still got the same one! Just replace the batteries occasionally.
Some of the finish is worn, there are lots of scuffs and scratches and the little rubber pads on the bottom disappeared at some point. But the print on all the function keys is still perfectly legible (which is more than I can say for a four-year old previously top-of-the-line Dell laptop) and it performs every basic and not so basic present value and other financial calculation you'll ever need. The screen is easy to read, the keys are easy to punch and the flat shape packs in any pocket or bag.
The 12-C is the real deal. Get one!
