I bought this calculator 2 years ago (haven't had to change the battery yet!) and use it from time to time to cross-check calculations I make on the spreadsheet. You can calculate many every day things with it: your mortgage payments, percentage profit/loss on investments, etc. It also has a good set of statistical functions.

I once had an Independent Financial Adviser visit me and he decided to borrow my calculator to figure out my pension contributions. He got stuck: there's no "=" key! It has RPN (Reverse Polish Notation) as standard but you can set it to Algebraic if you want to (I haven't used it much in Algebraic though).

The programming feature is awesome, and well worth the time you invest in learning it. Overall, this calculator has a steep learning curve, but it comes with an excellent user manual that helps in the learning process. Also, there are a few good books available if you want to get to grips with all its functionality.

To conclude, this is a classic calculator that will one day become a collector's item.

    HP12C is a masterpiece 2 April 2009
I first owned an HP12c in 1990, and lost/misplaced it last month (March 2009).

I am a Management Accountant by trade, and have driven the calculator hard over many years. Other than an annoying tendency to lose its 'two decimal place'setting if dropped, I haven't had a single problem with it.

The other massive advantage is that NOBODY borrows your calculator (they can never work out that you don't need to start from a 'clear' display!!)

I am exceedingly glad that I can procure a replacement!

    A very happy user 4 Jan 2012
I have had an original HP12C (1983 vintage) for a few years and have loved to use it ocassionally. Because of its "Classic" status I didn't want to wear it out so I bought the new HP12C Platinum for everyday use.

I had read on forums that the build quality of these new ones was very poor. I have not found that to be true. Quite the reverse actually.

Some say the keys are not very responsive or they rattle. My one is perfect. The keys are pivoted at the front so when you press them they tip back slightly. This is just like the original. I have tried pressing the keys as lightly as I can and no problems.

One small criticism is the f and g keys are not the same colours as other HP devices including the original HP12C or HP71B. Those two keys do look a little cheap.

I don't need a financial calculator really, but I find this layout with the numerals on the right to be easy to use. I always use it in RPN mode but the ALG mode is handy if someone wants to borrow it.

This comes with quite a bulky slip case. it's more like a cheap 50p wallet from a market. It was very tight but I stretched it before use and I don't get the rubber feet coming off like others have mentioned. It does the job but it won't slip into a shirt pocket as well as the original brown ones.

To sum up I would say it's as beautiful as the original and if there WERE any quality issues, they have been sorted out.
