Suitable as portable printer,
By Mr Ulster (Belfast, Northern Ireland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: HP Deskjet D1660 Printer (Electronics)
There are times when I need to have portable printing during my business travels. Some hotels are set up for this, others aren't. In most cases, it's convenient to bring along my own printing solution.
I had a Canon BJC-80 that I used several years ago. It packed in, and I had to find a replacement. The Canon Pixma iP100 Portable Inkjet Printer is nice, but a little pricey. I then discovered this HP Deskjet D1660, inspected its dimensions, and decided to give it a go. I packed it for a business trip in the Middle East, and it worked fine. All folded up, it's about the size of a regular bread bin. And it is light enough. It was a life saver on this particular trip. Print quality is fine. I configured the settings to print in "Fast Draft" mode, which is noticeably quicker, uses less ink, and is sufficient for most printing requirements. So, a portable (but checked-in flight bag) printing solution at a fraction of the price!

Excellent budget printer, but remember to buy the cable...,

This review is from: HP Deskjet D1660 Printer (Electronics)
This budget HP printer is aimed at the home office user, and does the job very well.
It's not packed with many exciting features, but its overall print quality and speed is very good. HP include two cartridges for you to get going, although they are the small capacity ones so they don't last all that long if you print often. That said though replacements are not to expensive so future running costs aren't too bad. As other reviewers have mentioned, the printer does not come with the cable that allows you to connect it to your PC or laptop. You have to buy this separately, but you can get one easily here on Amazon so no real problem. Also, you must remember to de-activate any anti virus software on your PC before attempting the software installation. For some reason my anti virus interfered with the setup process and it took forever, in fact it failed first time - so remember to disable it and then the installation process will be a breeze. Overall, I highly recommend this HP D1660 printer for simple home or office use.

Good value for money but extremely tempermental,
By
This review is from: HP Deskjet D1660 Printer (Electronics)
I get all kinds of problems with this printer. I've used it on 2 completely different laptops and had the same problems each time. It can turn a simple printing project into a an hour long frustrating slog. In short, this printer is very tempermental and simply won't print unless you've become very familiar with it behaviour.
The most important point is, DON'T SEND A JOB TO THE PRINTER WHILE ANOTHER ONE IS STILL PRINTING. For me it usually means it'll stop printing, and even worse, I can't even delete the print job in the list of queued jobs. If this happens, try the following steps (it's the ONLY thing that worked for me): 1) Go to Control Panel 2) Select System and Maintenance 3) Select Administrative Tools 4) Double-click on Services 5) In the list of services, scroll down until you find one called "Print Spooler" 6) Right-click on "Print Spooler" and select "Restart" 7) The "deleted" jobs will disappear and any queued jobs in your print queue will print Another thing I sometimes have to do, to get it to print, is hold down the power button. This seems to tell the printer that it should start printing. Also the old trick of turning it off and on again sometimes works. Annoyingly the same problem won't always have the same 'fix'. A problem which you earlier solved by disconnecting the printer seems to no longer solve the problem again. The print quality is fine for my needs which is just general printing, at home. A final point is, you need to buy a cable seperately, which will link the printer to your computer. The cable only costs 92p though and has free P&P. HP USB Cable A-B 2 Metre C6518A
