Got a Kindle from the wife for Christmas with some books on so been reading a lot. As a former member of the armed forces I like to read McNab/Ryan/Falkoner. Just finished this and was impressed. Not heard of Alex Shaw before but will now on look out for his books. Hetman has some very interesting characters and locations that seem more real than the usual stuff. The action starts on page one and then builds with a great plot and firfefights. Hetman is a bit more detailed than a McNab but not as wordy as a Clancy. Highly recommended if you like SAS books.

With a Kindle for Christmas I thought I would strike out and try a mixed bag of novels. This is the first of two SAS thrillers that look to be the start of an ongoing series. From the start, I'll state that I bought the second book directly after finishing this one!

As other reviewers have mentioned, the book is well researched and the author clearly knows the region - much of the action is set in the Ukrainian capitol Kiev. Though, having said that, some key events take place in my home county of West Sussex, so it was fun to spot the places I know.

The central character is a former SAS soldier, now living in Kiev who is drawn into events after recognising a man who was part of an armed robbery that nearly left him dead. There is a broad cast of varied characters in a well crafted plot built on a keen understanding of the fall of communism and the crime that followed it. The story moves along at a good pace that kept me reading to the end.

An enjoyable read!

I'll start of by saying that this was a good fun read. A modern SAS thriller set largely in Ukraine but extending back to England, it rattles along at a fast pace that kept me turning the pages. The author has clearly researched his subject and I would imagine knows the countries he writes about, there's a lot of back story rooted in 20th century history and the former Soviet Union. First and foremost, this is an action novel and the action scenes are well written - there can be a lot going on but it is always told with clarity, so you don't feel you've lost track of who's where and doing what.

I'm happy to say that the action is well supported by the plot and a good cast of fleshed out characters - down the smaller roles (some of who make appearances in the next book). The hero of the piece is a former SAS soldier who recognises a face from his past which draws him - and those close to him - into a plot involving the sniper referred to in the title. The two principle villains are well drawn, each with their own back story but I will say no more about them in case of spoilers. Some of my favourite characters were from the Ukrainian authorities - I quickly wished there had been more of them and happily, some come back for the next story.

This has been a solid start to a new series, laying down the foundation for future stories. It has a good resolution but leaves just enough open to be told in later books. Recommended!
