Book Description

10 Jan 2011
Yet in October 2008, during a press interview to promote the critically acclaimed Two Lovers, Phoenix made a shock announcement that he was to retire from acting, declining any future film roles in a bid to reinvent himself as a bona fide hip-hop musician. The resulting documentary, I'm Still Here, turned out to be one of the most extraordinary and memorable pieces of performance art ever committed to film. Born in 1974, Phoenix was a natural performer from an early age, regularly busking on the streets of New York City with his multi-talented siblings. Following in the footsteps of his older brother River, Joaquin decided on a career in acting, and his breakthrough performance alongside Nicole Kidman in To Die For confirmed him as the most intriguing actor of his generation. 13 years later, Phoenix undertook his most challenging role to date: playing a completely reinvented version of himself in Casey Affleck's I'm Still Here. In this in-depth biography, Martin Howden traces the rise of this unique actor, from his early career as a child star, though to his Oscar nominated performance in Walk the Line, and subsequent reinvention. Fascinating and compelling this is the first biography of one of the most complex actors working in film and the full story behind one of the most intriguing films ever to have come out of Hollywood.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read! 7 Mar 2011
Joaquin Phoenix is one of my favourite actors and I really enjoyed this biography of his life and all the amazing roles he's played. Of course there's loads of stuff about River in it, but he was a big part of Joaquin's life and career. Overall a really entertaining and insightful read - particularly regarding his 'hoax' retirement!

this book was sold as Used- Like New and i don't think it had been read at all as it was in perfect condition. it tells the life of Joaquin but bears heavy reference to his older brother River throughout which is a bit annoying! i know he was famous before Joaquin but it still got a bit boring with all the quotes from River and from people talking about River. it's worth a read but only if you don't mind all the River references.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting insight into an interesting life 17 Mar 2011

An insightful look into Joaquin's life and career to date. Joaquin fans, like me, will find this an interesting read. The language and layout is quite basic but a good, easy read for the train/tube journey into work or when you want something light to read over. A must for die hard Joaquin fans!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not much info 3 Mar 2011
I have been a fan of Joaquin since his portrayal of Johnny Cash. This book does not give us many details about his life, it is more a series of quotes by actors and directors who have worked with him. It gives no real insight into Joaquin's life. It also details quite a bit about his brother River and the films he made. It is basically a chronological order of each film Joaquin has made. It mentions one personal relationship he had with the actress Liv Tyler but not in any detail and it is such a brief mention, there are no other details of any other relationships he has had.
As for the 'hoax' he played on the american public re: his retirement from acting, this is dealt with in the last chapter but very sparingly.
All in all, it is not a very good read. I would have liked to have found out more about Joaquin the person rather than Joaquin the actor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Family Ties 20 Feb 2013
By Barbara Ward - Published on Amazon.com

Let me start by saying-I love everything Joaquin! He is an incredible actor. Every movie he is in, he takes on a different life. I bought this book to learn more details about his early life, family, his life choice to be vegan, etc. It did not disappoint. Great pictures of him and his family, direct quotes from him, and the author gave many sides to the story. The first part of the book was more about his brother River. If you are a fan of River you would find this a great read. It sets the background for how Joaquin got started in acting. I would highly recommend this book to fans and anyone who doesn't understand why he is so unique.

3.0 out of 5 stars I wanted more 28 Mar 2013

I consider Joaquin one of the best actors in the USA extant.
This book had no teeth in it. I found it interesting, as to his
family life, but I know Mr. Phoenix is a deep guy, and none of
that was reflected here.
4.0 out of 5 stars Still, it is well written. 9 April 2013

While the author borrowed wholesale many quotes, stories and interviews from the book : In search of River Phoenix, the truth behind the myth. At least in a few places he gave that author credit for the information, and though the first part of this book is based on "In Search of" I still found this book good reading and an interesting story about River's brother. It is especially interesting now that Joaquin is back to making films and we find all that talk about retiring and becoming a rapper was just a great script from the mind of Casey Affleck. Though many on the street said they could tell it was a rouse from the very beginning. They had some of the best in the business completely fooled & bamboozled including the late great Roger Ebert.
