Hervé Morvan was a renowned French poster artist who was active primarily between 1945 up until his death in 1980. He started out designing poster for cinema films, but later moved on to product advertising from 1950 onwards and is famously associated with innovative and ground breaking concepts for brands such as Perrier, Gitanes (cigarettes), Esso and Bally (shoes). His use of strong bright colouring, coupled with an amusingly playful graphical detailed style, remains strong to this day and it is almost impossible not to smile when faced with one of his designs.
This book is 270 page reminder of his work, and it is obvious that the posters selected for inclusion have been chosen carefully and lovingly to show the wide range of work Morvan produced over his career. Divided into nine sections (Children, Food/Beverages, Household Goods, Fashion, Travel, Events, Alcohol/Cigarettes/Lottery, Film/Music, Greeting Cards), each subject reproduces many examples of the variety and development of his work and each piece is fully referenced. Additionally, the book contains a number of beautiful personal photos showing Morvan at various stages of his life, and a commentary that runs throughout the book written by people close to him and translated into English, French, Japanese. This book is a must for any fan of Morvan's work, or for anyone who has an interest in the art of posters and the clever graphical communication of messages.
