No doubt like most purchasers I knew much more about Herschel the astronomer (the discoverer of Uranus no less) than Herschel the musician, though recall one of his pieces, though not on this disc, being used for a signature tune of some astronomy programme or other. So, give it a go I thought. First impressions were of rather jolly, if slightly "obvious" music, perhaps explaining why he's not as well known (in music circles at least) as say Handel. Nice enough, and rather well played all the same. However, on repeated hearings, the sheer joy of the music (and the band's playing) came through and I have really come to love this record, and play it a lot - and confess my initially luke warm impression was doing it a great disservice. This is wonderfull stuff - and if this is anything to go by it's a real shame so little of Sir William's music seems to be available on disc - 4 of the 24 symphonies on this disc so there is clearly heaps to choose from.
Highly recommended !
